Men Roll Past Youngstown State

The Wright State men's basketball team shot 49 percent for the game and held Youngstown State to just 29 percent shooting as the Raiders rolled past the Penguins 81-45 in Horizon League action Saturday night at WSU's Nutter Center.

The Raiders led the entire contest as they scored the first six points and eventually went up 26-11 following a Mark Alstork jumper with 8:05 remaining in the first half. 

YSU cut the deficit to 28-20 on two Cameron Morse free throws at the 3:58 mark, only to see WSU close the period with a 15-6 run, capped off by a rare four-point play by Grant Benzinger in the final seconds, to take a 43-26 halftime lead.

Wright State shot 53 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes compared to 42 percent for Youngstown State.

The Raiders continued to build on the advantage through the opening 12 minutes of the second half, with the biggest margin being 73-35 on the second of back-to-back Daniel Mortensen threes with 8:21 to play.

WSU shot 45 percent in the second half to finish at 49 percent overall while the Penguins hit just five of 28 shots for 18 percent, ending the game at 29 percent altogether.  Wright State led 32-12 in points in the paint, 17-3 in points off of turnovers and 13-4 in second-chance points.

Three Raiders led the way with 13 points each in Michael Karena, Benzinger and Alstork while JT Yoho added 12 off the bench.  In all, 11 WSU players dented the scoring column.

Morse paced Youngstown State (7-12, 2-4 Horizon) with 18 points.

Wright State (10-8, 4-1 Horizon) continues the five-game homestand on Monday, January 18, with a 7:00 contest against Detroit.
