Box Score A Grant Benzinger three with 17.1 seconds remaining capped off a 17-7 rally in the final 4:31 as the Wright State men's basketball team pulled out a 77-76 Horizon League victory over Detroit Monday night at WSU's Nutter Center.
The Raiders erased an early six-point deficit with a 10-0 run, the final five coming from Mark Alstork, to go up 15-11 with 13:06 remaining in the first half. The two teams were then tied on three different occasions before Detroit took a 37-32 halftime lead by outscoring WSU 7-2 over the final two minutes.
The Titans shot 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, includign six of 13 from three-point range, while Wright State shot 41 percent overall but was just four of 11 from behind the arc.
Back-to-back threes from Paris Bass extended the Detroit advantage to 47-37 three minutes into the second half and the Titans took their biggest lead of the night at 53-39 on a Jaleel Hogan layup with 15:34 to play.
The margin was 69-60 on a Carlton Brundidge free throw at the 4:40 mark before WSU tallied seven straight points, including a Benzinger three, to make a two-point contest with still 3:26 remaining.
A Josh McFolley three gave the Titans a 74-69 edge with two minutes left, but Benzinger followed with a three-point play and Alstork converted a reverse layup at the 1:08 mark to tie the game.
After Bass and Hogan each hit one of two foul shots to put Detroit back in front, the stage was set for Benzinger's game-winner. Joe Thomasson missed a three from the top of the key, but got the offensive rebound and threw a pass to Benzinger on the left wing, who connected on a three with 17.1 seconds left to put the Raiders up one.
The Titans had one final chance, but a three attempt by Bass from the top of the key was short and the ball went out of bounds to Wright State with under a second remaining.
Detroit continued its hot shooting in the second half, hitting for 52 percent to finish at 50 percent overall while WSU ended up at 41 percent. Both teams had their struggles at the foul line as the Titans were 17 of 26, 12 of 20 in the second half, and the Raiders were 24 of 35, 18 of 25 after halftime.
Alstork led Wright State with 21 points, 16 coming in the second half, while Michael Karena had 15, Benzinger 12 and Thomasson 10 along with eight rebounds.
Bass paced all scorers with 28 for Detroit (9-8, 3-3 Horizon) while Anton Wilson had 16 and Hogan 13.
Wright State (11-8, 5-1 Horizon) continues the five-game homestand on Friday, January 22, as the Raiders takes on league leader Valparaiso (16-3, 6-0 Horizon) for a 7:00 contest.
