Men Pull Out 61-59 Win at Valparaiso

Box Score

A Biggie Minnis putback with one second remaining capped off an 8-0 run and lifted the Wright State men's basketball team to a 61-59 Horizon League win at Valparaiso Saturday night, snapping the Crusaders' 25-game home winning streak.

Valpo scored the first five points of the contest and held the lead until a JT Yoho three and a Michael Karena jumper gave WSU a 13-11 advantage halfway through the first half.  The two teams were then tied three times before the Raiders went in front 33-22 at the 1:33 mark following a 12-0 run, a run that included three-pointers from Mark Alstork and Joe Thomasson.

Wright State led 33-24 at the half as it hit 12 of 23 shots in the opening 20 minutes, including four of seven from behind the arc, while Valparaiso shot 44 percent overal, was two of nine from three and two of seven at the foul line.

The Crusaders gradually chipped away at the deficit and regained the lead at 41-39 on a Shane Hammink three with 14:05 to play.  Karena briefly put the Raiders in front 47-46 on a layup at the 9:57 mark, but Valpo looked to be in control, up 59-53 on two David Skara free throws with 2:35 left.

Minnis, though, started the decisive 8-0 run by banking in a three-pointer with 1:18 remaining and after Valparaiso missed a three on its next possession, Minnis connected with Grant Benzinger for a three in the left corner to tie the game at the 49.9-second mark.

An offensive foul with 22.4 seconds left set the stage for the game-winner.  After Karena's shot from the top of the key hit the back of the iron, Minnis tipped in a shot from the left side of the lane with a second left.

WSU shot 49 percent for the game, including six of 11 threes, while Valpo shot 42 percent.  The Raiders also led 19-6 in points off of turnovers.

Four Wright State starters scored in double figures as Thomasson had 14, Alstork 12, Yoho 11 and Karena 10.  Minnis added nine off the bench.

Alec Peters paced Valparaiso (21-5, 11-2 Horizon) with 14 points while Keith Carter and Darien Walker each had 10.

Wright State (16-11, 10-4 Horizon) will play its third game in five days on Monday, February 15, hosting Oakland at 5:00 in a game that will be televised on ESPNU.
