Men Defeat Cleveland State in Regular-Season Finale

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team held off a late Cleveland State rally to defeat the Vikings 55-51 in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at Quicken Loans Arena.

After the Vikings jumped out to a 10-3 lead, the Raiders answered with eight straight points to go back in front, including back-to-back layup by Biggie Minnis and a Mark Alstork three.

A Michael Karena layup put WSU up for good at the 6:15 mark and Wright State extended the margin to as much as 28-20 on a Karena three-point play with 1:14 remaining before CSU's Vinny Zollo rounded out the first half scoring with a jumper in the final minute.

The Raiders shot 38 percent in the opening 20 minutes, including three of eight from three-point range, while Cleveland State shot 32 percent overall and was two of seven from behind the arc.

A jumper and dunk by Karena pushed the WSU lead into double figures with 8:48 to play and the Raiders went up 49-34 on a Minnis layup with six minutes to go.

The advantage was 52-40 with 2:56 remaining before the Vikings went on an 11-1 run, capped off by a Rob Edwards four-point play at the 16.9-second mark, to make it 53-51.  CSU, though, would get no closer as Alstork hit a pair of free throws with 6.8 seconds left to round out the scoring.

Wright State shot 37 percent for the game, six of 17 from three, while Cleveland State shot 30 percent, seven of 19 from three.  The Raiders led 22-10 in points in the paint and 13-5 in points off of turnovers.

Karena led WSU with 18 points while Minnis had 11 off the bench.

Edwards paced Cleveland State (9-22, 4-14 Horizon) with 20 points while Kenny Carpenter had 13.

Wright State (19-12, 13-5 Horizon) will be the #3 seed for next week's Little Caesars Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.  The Raiders will find out its first-round opponent and game time on Sunday.
