Five-Run Eighth Lifts Baseball to Win in League Opener

The Wright State baseball team scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and went on to a 9-4 victory over Youngstown State in the Horizon League opener for both teams Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Penguins went up 2-0 with a pair of runs in the third before the Raiders took their first lead with three in the fourth. A Gabe Snyder double and walks to Daniel Arthur and John Brodner loaded the bases for JD Orr, who grounded a double just inside the third base line for two runs.
Brodner was thrown out at the plate on the play, but WSU still managed to gain a 3-2 advantage as Orr scored on a Jason DeFevers ground out.
YSU went back in front with two runs in the sixth, only to see Wright State tie it in the bottom of the frame as Brodner doubled to right center, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.
It stayed that way until the decisive eighth. Orr started the rally by beating out an infield chopped and after Peyton Burdick was hit by a pitch and DeFevers moved both up with a sacrifice bunt, Matt Morrow was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Mitch Roman followed with a double to left center to plate two and two more came in as Ryan Fucci tripled to right center. Snyder then plated Fucci with a grounder wide of third.
E.J. Trapino (1-1) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Raider starter Jesse Scholtens went the first six innings, striking out eight.
Offensively, Orr had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored while Fucci had two hits and two RBI, Snyder two hits and Roman two RBI.
Wright State (11-7, 1-0 Horizon) and Youngstown State (4-10, 0-1 Horizon) continue the three-game series Saturday at 2:00.
