Baseball Takes Series Opener at Valparaiso

The Wright State baseball team broke open a 2-1 lead with four in the sixth and then added single runs in each of the final three innings to win the series opener 9-6 at Valparaiso on Friday.
Matt Morrow doubled in Daniel Arthur with the first run of the game in the second, only to see the Crusaders tie it with a run of their own in the third. It stayed that way until a Gabe Snyder sacrifice fly gave WSU a 2-1 edge in the fifth.
The Raiders made it 6-1 with four in the sixth. Morrow singled in a run with the bases loaded and after JD Orr delivered a two-run single, Mitch Roman capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Valpo answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but Ryan Fucci countered with a solo home run in the seventh, his fourth of the season. Wright State added another in the eighth as Orr doubled and Roman singled and one more in the ninth as Jason DeFevers walked with the bases loaded.
The Crusaders scored once in the eighth and another in the ninth, but Jack Van Horn picked up his fourth save of the year by retiring the two batters he faced. Starter Jesse Scholtens (3-0) went 6.1 innings for the win, scattering seven hits in allowing three earned runs.
At the plate, Orr had three hits and two RBI, Roman and Morrow two hits and two RBI and Fucci and Peyton Burdick two hits each. Arthur scored twice.
Wright State (14-7, 4-0 Horizon) and Valparaiso (7-12, 3-1 Horizon) close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:00 Eastern.
