The Wright State baseball team was one out from a series sweep at Valparaiso, but had to settle for a split Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders rallied for a 3-2 win in the opener before the Raiders won game two 7-3.
WSU scored two runs in the third inning of game one on RBI singles by Mitch Roman and Ryan Fucci and maintained that lead through six innings thanks to the pitching of starter Robby Sexton, who limited Valpo to three hits and a walk while striking out four.
Valparaiso scored an unearned run in the seventh, but Wright State still had the lead until the Crusaders ralled for two runs in the bottom of the ninth after the first two batters were retired.
The Raiders went up 2-0 in the second inning of game two thanks to two errors and added two more in the fourth as Fucci scored on a wild pitch and Brad Macciocchi and Jason DeFevers had back-to-back doubles. WSU then made it 5-0 in the fifth as JD Orr scored on a wild pitch.
Valpo closed to within two with three in the sixth, but would get no closer as Wright State picked up a run in the seventh on a Roman sacrifice fly and another in the ninth as Gabe Snyder walked with the bases loaded.
Caleb Sampen (3-0) went 7.1 innings for the win while Logan Blair picked up his second save by pitching the final 1.2 innings.
Roman and Macciocchi each had two hits to pace the Raider offense, with Macciocchi also scoring twice.
Wright State (15-8, 5-1 Horizon) travels to Xavier Tuesday for a 3:00 contest.
