Men Roll Past Detroit in HL Second Round

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team posted its second win in as many days at the Little Ceasar's Horizon League Championship at Joe Louis Arena, taking control early in rolling to an 82-72 second round win over Detroit Sunday afternoon.

A Carlton Brundidge layup opened the scoring and turned out to be the only lead of the game for the Titans as the Raiders broke away from a 4-4 tie with a 14-4 run, half of those points coming from Michael Karena.  The margin grew to 16 following a JT Yoho jumper at the 10:05 mark before Detroit tallied 11 straight points to close the gap to 27-22 with 5:59 remaining in the period.

WSU, though, pushed the advantage back in double figures three different times down the stretch before going into halftime with a 37-29 lead.

The Titans shot 50 percent compared to 42 percent for Wright State in the first half, but the Raiders were nine of 12 at the foul line while Detroit was five of eight.  WSU also forced 13 turnovers while committing six, resulting in a 14-8 edge in points off of turnovers.

An 8-0 burst, capped by threes from Daniel Mortensen and Yoho, put Wright State up 54-37 but back came the Titans with eight straight points over a 4:44 span to trim the margin to nine.

Yoho, however, answered with a jumper, a three and a foul shot and Karena connected on a pair of free throws to make it 62-45 and Detroit would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.

The Raiders shot 52 percent from the floor in the second hald to end up at 46 percent, including five of 17 three-pointers, while the Titans shot 45 percent for the game, but missed all 11 of their three attempts.  WSU was also 29 of 38 at the foul line compared to 20 of 23 for Detroit.

Four Wright State starters scored in double figures as Yoho had 20, Karena 19, Mark Alstork 17 and Joe Thomasson 12.

Paris Bass paced Detroit (16-15) with a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds off the bench while Brundidge had 18 and Jaleel Hogan 11.

Wright State (21-12) will face #2 seed Oakland in the semifinals Monday night at 9:30.  The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
