The Wright State baseball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, but then had to hold off a Northern Kentucky comeback attempt in the top of the ninth for a 4-3 Horizon League victory in the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.

NKU scored twice in the top of the first as Kyle Colletta singled to center with one out and Logan Spurlin followed with a two-run home run down the left field line.

From there, both starting pitchers threw blanked the opposition over the next seven innings as WSU starter Caleb Sampen held the Norse to just one hit, retiring 20 of 22 batters he faced, while Northern Kentucky starter Pat Kelley gave up only five hits.

The Raider offense, however, came alive in the eighth after the first two batters were retired. Pinch-hitter Zach Weatherford started the rally with a bloop single to center and after JD Orr walked, Mitch Roman dropped a hit just out of the reach of the center fielder for a RBI single. Ryan Fucci then tied the game with a hit to left.

Daniel Arthur put Wright State in front as he grounded a single through the right side of the infield and the Raiders picked up their final run as Fucci and Adrian Marquez pulled off a double steal of home and second, respectively.

Sampen retired the first two batters on grounders in the ninth, the second on a great play by Roman at short, but then the Norse strung together three straight hits, including a Mike Moffatt RBI double to cut the margin to 4-3.

Dominic Mercurio was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Raider reliever Jack Van Horn picked up his fifth save of the year by inducing Will Haueter to ground out to Kevin Whatley at third.

Sampen (4-0) struck out a season-high seven and the freshman righthander did not walk a batter in earning the win.

Orr and Fucci each had two hits for Wright State (18-9, 7-2 Horizon), who travels down I-75 Tuesday for a 6:00 contest at Cincinnati.
