Women's Tennis Advances to HL Finals

For the first time in school history, the Wright State women's tennis team has advanced to the finals of the Horizon League Tournament, accomplishing the feat on Saturday as the Raiders upset #1 seed Cleveland State 4-3 in the semifinals at Ann Arbor, Michigan.

CSU won in #2 doubles to open play, but the Raiders rallied to take the doubles point as Megan Brdicka and Elaine Cloern won in #3 doubles followed by Taylor Culbertson and Tori Turner in #1 doubles.

Cleveland State evened the match at 1-1 with a win in #5 singles and it was back and forth from there until the Vikings went up 3-2 after a win in #4 singles.

Aby Madrigal, however, kept WSU alive with a victory in #6 singles and the match came down to #1 singles as Karoline Haller, who earlier in the week was named First Team All-Horizon League, faced CSU's Isabella Spindler, the Horizon League Freshman of the Year.

Spindler won the first set 6-3, but Haller bounced back to post a 6-2 win in the second set to force a third and final set. Haller then trailed 3-0 in that final set, only to rally for a 6-4 decision to clinch the match for the Raiders.

Wright State (20-8) will face #3 seed and defending champion Youngstown State, who defeated UIC 4-1 in the other semifinal, in Sunday's final at 11 am.  The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
