Wright State volleyball returns home to C.J. McLin Gymnasium this weekend to take on Green Bay on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. and UIC on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m.
Wright State
Wright State volleyball is currently 7-10 overall, and 1-3 in the Horizon League after playing their second consecutive weekend on the road last week. Wright State dropped their first match against Oakland in three sets, but turned around the next day and defeated Cleveland State 3-1. The Raiders are currently in eighth place in the Horizon League standings. Offensively, freshman outside hitter Abby Barcus led the Raiders in kills in both matches over the weekend. Barcus was instrumental in the 3-1 win over Cleveland State where she led the Raiders with 18 kills, almost beating her career high of 19 kills which she recorded in a match against West Virginia earlier in the season. Barcus helped clinch the fourth set to win the match against Cleveland State with an impressive eight kills in the set. Defensively, senior middle hitter Megan Hopkins led the Raiders over the weekend with eight blocks, posting two against Oakland and six blocks out of the Raiders nine total blocks in the win over Cleveland State. Hopkins is a Horizon League conference individual leader in blocks, and currently is sixth in the league with 63 blocks for an average of 1.00 block per set.Â
Green Bay
Green Bay volleyball is currently 8-7 overall, and 4-0 in the Horizon League after having the advantage of playing the first two weekends of conference play on their home court. The Phoenix won both matches last weekend sweeping Milwaukee in three sets and then overpowering UIC 3-1. Both wins last weekend now place Green Bay in first place in the Horizon League standings. Green Bay is second in the conference in kills with 712 kills for an average of 13.96 kills per set. Green Bay's senior middle blocker, Lydia DeWeese, is in third place in the conference for the number of kills she has posted this season. DeWeese has recorded 182 kills, averaging 3.57 kills per set. DeWeese also leads the entire conference with her strong hitting percentage of .370. DeWeese led her team at the net last weekend in both matches posting 16 kills against Milwaukee and 17 kills against UIC.  Wright State's block will need to be ready at the net to try and slow down the senior middle hitter. Wright State will take on Green Bay, whom their overall record against is 29-27, Friday evening at 6 p.m.
UIC
UIC volleyball is currently 12-5 overall, and 3-1 in the Horizon League which places them in a tie with IUPUI for second place in the league standings. The Flames lost to Green Bay last weekend in four sets, but were able to rally the next day and beat Milwaukee 3-2 in a hard-fought battle. UIC is currently in third place in the conference in kills, hitting percentage, and assists. They have a solid offense which is led by senior right side hitter, Kyisha Hunt, who is fourth in the league for kills with 228 kills, and an average of 3.51 kills per set. UIC is also very strong defensively and is led by junior libero, Carla Salvato, who is fourth in the league with 292 digs for an average of 4.49 digs per set. Salvato was named the Horizon League's Defensive Player of the Week this fall on September 11th for her steadiness in the back row. Wright State will take on UIC, whom their overall record against is 25-33, Saturday evening at 4 p.m.
