Following his junior season at Wright State, the catcher was selected by Oakland in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He was drafted by the A's in the third round with the 83rd pick.
In 2016, Murphy (Dayton, OH/Centerville) hit .287 with six home runs, 34 RBI and 38 runs scored despite missing six weeks due to an hand injury. In league play, he knocked in 17 in 17 games and scored 18 runs while being named to the League's Second Team and a Third Team All American by Perfect Game. Murphy was a First Team All-League honoree in 2015 as he hit .329 with four home runs, 36 RBI and 52 runs scored. In 2014, he was named to the league's All-Freshman Team as he hit .301 with four home runs, 35 RBI and 39 runs scored.
Murphy is currently playing for AA Midland RockHounds where is currently hitting .289 in 64 games with 45 RBI, 50 runs, 25 doubles and eight home runs. Murphy is ranked as the 66th top prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.Â
