@WSU_MBB Takes Down IUPUI

Raiders Host Oakland Thursday

The Wright State men's basketball team took a win at IUPUI 79-74 Sunday afternoon in a game with many twists and turns.  WSU led by as much as 21 points in the first half but let the Jags sneak back into the game to go up by three in the second half.  WSU, with Loudon Love on the bench for most of the last period with foul trouble, came back to seal the win.  WSU is now 13-11, 7-4 while IUPUI drops to 14-10, 6-5.

The Raiders had four players score in double figures led by Bill Wampler with 16 points and Mark Hughes and Cole Gentry each adding 13 points.  Love finished with 12 points in 16 minutes.  Hughes grabbed seven rebounds.  WSU shot 47% overall from the field, connecting on eight threes.  Both teams had 36 boards.

First Half
Wright State started off fast with a 15-2 lead as Parker Ernsthausen had five points and Love and Hughes four points each before the first timeout.  WSU went up 19-2 before the Jaguars scored.  The Raiders continued strong, going up 29-15 at the eight-minute mark as Wampler had 10 points, six from three-point range.  The Jags cut the lead to 29-25, but the Raiders came back to go up 34-27 into the final break at 2:10.  IUPUI cut the deficit to just two but a three pointer by Gentry at the buzzer made the halftime score 40-35.  Wampler had 13 points with Love at 10 while Ernsthausen had nine.  The Raiders shot 54% from the field and had 14 rebounds to just 12 for the Jaguars.

Second Half
The Jags scored the first five points to tie the score at 40.  WSU held on until 12:14 when IUPUI took the upperhand at 53-52 but Malachi Smith hit a layup to take back the lead 54-53 by the 12-minute break.  With IUPUI up 57-54, Love, who had been out with four fouls, returned to score under the basket to make it 57-56 by the eight-minute timeout.  Out of the break, WSU stopped the Jags on defense and scored on a Gentry floater.  After Love fouled out, Smith hit two free throws and Alan Vest made an important three pointer to give WSU the lead 64-60 at the final media break at 3:44.  Out of the break, Gentry hit a long three and Hughes made a layup to help the Raiders to a 69-61 lead.  Under a minute, Cole hit two free throws for a nine-point lead.  Gentry went to the line once again but missed the second after making the first to break his string at 46, one shy of the WSU record.  The Raiders ended up winning 79-74.

Nagy Said
"Number one, coming off the loss, it was important for us to win today for the split.  We told them it was going to be a tough game against a tough team and a very good coach.  It was good to see Mark step up after struggling, and Cole as well.  We were hungry, and it was tough as IUPUI won three straight going into this game.
