On Thursday night, the Wright State women's basketball team won 73-69 against the Panthers in Milwaukee. With the win, the Raiders move to 19-5 overall and 11-1 in the Horizon League.
Emily Vogelpohl led scoring for the Raiders with 15 points. Vogelpohl shot 3/5 from deep and also forced four steals against the Panthers. Michal Milled tallied 13 points and forced two blocks against Milwaukee shooters.
Mackenzie Taylor added 12 points with nine coming from deep and three coming from the foul line.
Symone Simmons posted 13 rebounds, four assists, and added four points in the effort.
Tyler Frierson came away with nine hauls and also posted the highest +/- of the night with a +12 while on the floor for the Raiders.
1st Quarter
The game started off with a bang for the Raiders as
Michal Miller sank a three-pointer just one minute into the game.
Tyler Frierson and
Imani Partlow would do work in the paint, and each added one layup.
Mackenzie Taylor would bet the next Raider to score as she landed her three-point shot from long. The 9-0 start to the game would trigger a timeout from the Panthers' bench at the 6:43 mark of the quarter. Out of the timeout the Panthers would finally get on the board but the Raiders would have an answer with another three points coming from
Emily Vogelpohl. Milwaukee would sink a three on their next possession, but
Angel Baker would add two points as an answer. The next big play would come from a
Mackenzie Taylor steal which would lead to a layup from
Dasia Evans. Evans would put in the next two points for the Raiders from the line after drawing a foul. The Panthers would string together five points in the last minutes of the quarter to pull the score to 20-13 in favor of the Raiders.
2nd Quarter
To start the quarter the Panthers' Lizzie Odegard would put in a three-point shot in their comeback effort.
Mackenzie Taylor would answer with a three-point shot of her own. After a two and a plus one for the Panthers, the Raiders would call a timeout with the score standing at 23-19 and 6:54 remaining in the half. Coming out of the timeout,
Imani Partlow would put in a two in the paint. On the next possession,
Dasia Evans would put in the next points for the Raiders, also drawing a foul on the play and sinking her free throw. The Panthers would answer though, putting in the next seven points of the quarter pulling back within two of the Raiders. With 4:26 on the clock, the Wright State bench would call a timeout. After an offensive turnover,
Emily Vogelpohl would steal the ball back and put in a quick layup. On the next Panther possession,
Symone Simmons would also come away with a steal and would finish the play on the other end with a jumper for two. Milwaukee would have an answer with a three coming from Jamie Reit. The Raiders would put in the next four points with
Symone Simmons and
Jalise Beck each putting in two. The Panthers would add another two points, but
Anisja Harris would answer with shot from behind the arc. On the other end, the Panthers would finish with a three of their own coming from Sydney Levi. Entering the half, the Raiders would lead 39-34 against the Panthers.
3rd Quarter
The Panthers began the half by shooting free throws, Megan Walstad would sink both of her shots. On the other end,
Emily Vogelpohl would open the scoring for the Raiders with a three-pointer. Fifty seconds later,
Michal Miller would put in two points and one possession later a three-point shot of her own to put Wright State up 47-38. After a media timeout,
Tyler Frierson would sink a layup and put the Raiders' lead back up to double-digits. The double-digit lead would be short lived though as Panthers' player Lizzie Odegard would put in a two. Coming out of the timeout,
Emily Vogelpohl would add two points from the foul line. The Panthers would get back on the boards with a three from Sydney Levy and then add two more points off a foul.
Dasia Evans would put the short Panthers' run to an end with a two-point jumper. With 2:11 on the clock,
Dasia Evans forced a critical steal, which led to two points from
Emily Vogelpohl. The steal and score would put the Raiders' lead back up to ten points over the Panthers. One possession later, Vogelpohl would sink her third trey of the night and would force a Milwaukee timeout as the Raiders' lead was extended to 13 points. Out of the timeout, the Panthers' Akaylah Hayes would make a layup and then convert a free throw. In the last seconds of the quarter the Panthers would force a steal and make a quick layup with an additional point on a shooting foul to pull back within seven points of the Raiders.
4th Quarter
The Raiders started off the quarter with two turnovers and quickly saw their lead slip to just three points.
Angel Baker would put in a layup but the Panthers answered with a three-pointer. After another Panther score, the Raiders saw their lead slip to a single point, but
Emily Vogelpohl would step up and force her third steal of the night and finish the play with three-pointer. Milwaukee would match Vogelpohl's three-pointer with one of their own to put the Raiders on notice.
Emily Vogelpohl would force her fourth steal of the night, but no score came off of the turnover. At the 2:17 mark,
Imani Partlow would break the scoring down with a layup under the basket and put the Raiders back up by three points. The next Raiders score would come from a
Michal Miller layup, during which Miller was also able to draw a foul to add one more point from the free throw line. The Panthers would sink a three and put the Raiders' lead at just two points with 34 seconds remaining in the game.
Michal Miller would add one more point to her game total after receiving a foul from the Panthers. With eight seconds on the clock, Milwaukee would be able to call a timeout and draw up a play in an effort to tie the game. Out of the timeout,
Mackenzie Taylor was able to foul Jamie Reit to send her to the line and potentially get the Raiders the ball back to end the game. After the foul and a subsequent timeout,
Mackenzie Taylor drew a foul and was sent to the line where she would make one of her two foul shots. The Raiders would be able to rebound the missed foul and would garner two more foul shots from
Mackenzie Taylor. After Taylor was able to sink both of her shots, the Panther's Megan Walstad would send up a desperation three, but it would fall short.

The Raiders will remain on the road and head to Green Bay to take on the Phoenix. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 2:00pm EST. In their first meeting of the season, the Raiders won 85-67 against the Phoenix. Green Bay currently sits at third in the Horizon League standings.
