Wright State (8-4) claimed their eighth win of the season on Tuesday in a win at Cincinnati. The Raiders improved their March record to 6-1 thanks to a strong starting debut from
Sam Wirsing on the mound. The freshman tossed five scoreless innings and struck out four in his first career win. Wirsing kept pace with Bearcat starter Drake Batcho until the Raiders broke through the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth.
JD Orr started the inning with a walk and recorded the first run when
Peyton Burdick hit a double in the right field gap. In the next at-bat,
Seth Gray hit a ball beyond the diving center fielder and legged out a triple. After a pitching change,
Zach Weatherford successfully executed a sac fly to score the third run of the inning.
Mitch Gremling took the mound for the Raiders in the sixth and worked around a pair of baserunners to keep Cincinnati scoreless through six. Wright State added a run in the seventh.
JD Orr earned a hit on the first pitch he saw and stole second.
Zane Harris also swung at the first pitch and ripped a double to right. Orr crossed the plate and a 4-0 lead belonged to the Raiders.
Cincinnati claimed a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Wright State all but secured the win with a huge frame in the ninth.
Quincy Hamilton led the inning with a pinch-hit full-count walk and Orr followed with a walk as well. After Hamilton and Orr scooted a base ahead after a wild pitch, the Bearcats elected to intentionally walk
Peyton Burdick.
Kyle Casserly entered off the bench and made Cincinnati pay with a 2-RBI single.
Seth Gray wore a pitch to load the bases again where
Zach Weatherford and
Chase Slone each recorded an RBI. The Bearcats scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but
Evan Moores recorded the third out to close out the victory for Wright State.
The Raiders return home to Nischwitz Stadium on Wednesday for a matchup against the Toledo Rockets.
