Wright State (9-4) continued their winning streak with an impressive offensive display in a win over Toledo on Wednesday. The Raiders jumped out to a big lead in the second inning and never looked back.
Riley Perlich completed four innings in his first start and allowed just one earned run while striking out five.
Henry Von Hollen entered in relief and recorded the win.
1st Inning
Perlich opened with a seven-pitch first inning using three fly outs to retire the Rockets in order. The Raiders opened the scoring when
Zane Harris hit a ball that touched down just a couple feet from the left field line for a double.
Peyton Burdick, who singled and advanced to second base on a balk scored on the Harris double. Wright State proceeded to load the bases, but Toledo starter Axel Bueter escaped without allowing any more runs.
2nd Inning
After leaving the bases full in the first, Wright State took full advantage of offensive opportunities in the second. The Raiders tallied four runs in the inning all with two outs to open up an early 5-0 lead.
JD Orr singled into right and then stole both second and third for his first two of four stolen bases on the day.
Chase Slone took a four-pitch walk to put runners at the corners and
Peyton Burdick singled for an RBI.
Zane Harris stepped up to the plate and ripped a bases clearing double to left and
Zach Weatherford added the final run of the frame with an RBI single.
4th Inning
The Rockets put a run on the board and the Raiders responded with a run of their own. Burdick stayed patient at the plate and drew a lead-off walk on seven pitches and scored the sixth Wrigh State run after a
Zach Weatherford double.
5th Inning
Toledo put together their best offensive stretch of the day, scoring three runs in the fifth on Henry Van Hollen. Wright State once again answered by adding two runs of their own, extending the lead to 8-4 after the fifth. Orr and Burdick continued their fantastic day at the plate with an RBI each in the frame.
6th Inning
Wright State put the finishing touches on their third straight home game with ten or more runs by adding two more runs in the sixth. The Raiders kept the pressure on the Rockets by stealing seven bases in the game, two of which were swiped by
Damon Dues, who eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Justin McConnell scored the final run for the Raiders on yet another
JD Orr single and RBI.
Toledo put up a run on the board in the ninth but fell to Wright State 10-5. The Raiders improved to 4-0 in both home contests and in games against in-state opponents.
JD Orr put up huge numbers in the win, hitting 4 for 5 with two runs, two RBI, and four stolen bases.
Peyton Burdick went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate and also drew two walks, scored three times, and drove in two. The Raiders will open up Horizon League play with a weekend series against Milwaukee.
