The Wright State golf team will head to the Horizon League Championship Sunday-Tuesday at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL, playing on the El Campeon Course. The winner will receive the conference's NCAA berth and if not on the winning team, the top individual will advance to the NCAA Tournament as well.
"We have had good moments over the last two weeks and need to be concerned with ourselves at this point," WSU head coach Brian Arlinghaus said. "We have to go out there and do our own thing. If our five guys can do their jobs, by the end of round three, we will be right in the mix."
Last week, the Raiders shot 365-366=731 at the Wright State Invitational. Freshman Cole Corder led WSU as he tied for ninth with scores of 69-75=144. His 69 was the best of his college career. Senior Mitch Lehigh tied for 14th at 73-72=145. The third place finish came a week after WSU placed tied for second at the Big Blue Intercollegiate.
Last year as a team at the Horizon League Championship, the Raiders finished fourth with scores of 297-309-308=914, three strokes from third place IUPUI. Cleveland State repeated as champions with a total of 889. Bryce Haney and Mitch Lehigh led the way for the Raiders, both shooting 227 for the tournament and tying for ninth place. Chris Rossi tied for 13th overall, shooting a final round 79 and 229 for the tournament.
The Raiders won Horizon League/MCC championships in 1996, 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2004 with a Mid-Continent (now Summit League) title in 1993, making four NCAA appearances. Ryan Wenzler represented the Raiders in the NCAA Tournament as he won the Horizon League individual title in 2016. He also tied for the top spot in 2017 but fell in a playoff round.
