The Wright State women's basketball team battled against No. 24 Michigan on the road, but the Wolverines shot nearly 50 percent from the floor to hand the Raiders an 82-59 loss on Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
With the loss, Wright State falls to 0-2 overall, while Michigan improves to 4-0 overall. The Raiders will now get set to begin Horizon League play with back-to-back contests at Detroit Mercy next Saturday and Sunday, with both contests set for 2 p.m. tipoffs. The year's Horizon League schedule will see teams play one League opponent twice each week with games taking place on consecutive days at the same location.
The Raiders would score first on a
Tyler Frierson layup, which turned out to be Wright State's only lead of the contest, as the Wolverines answered quickly and tied the game just seven seconds later. After the hosts lead 48-27 at the half, Wright State came out of the break and outscored Michigan 21-11 in the third quarter to pull to within 12 points, but were unable to get any closer after the Wolverines scored 12 of the first 15 points of the final frame to seal the contest.
Angel Baker recorded her second consecutive double-figure scoring game to start the season, scoring 15 points on 7-for-20 shooting, while she added five rebounds and a team-leading three steals. Frierson added nine points of her own, while junior newcomer
Jada Wright saw her first action as a Raider, finishing with four points and a block.
Michigan finished the afternoon shooting 49 percent from the floor, including over 55 percent in the first half, as Wright State finished the afternoon shooting 31 percent from the floor while connecting on only one three-pointer (1-for-7) and Michigan hit seven threes (7-for-15).
The Raiders won the battle on the boards, out rebounding the Wolverines 46-43 overall. Wright State also led in three other categories: points in the paint (38-36), second chance points (26 points to Michigan's 15) and bench points, as the Raiders saw seven players combine for 26 points off the bench as 13 total players saw action in the game.
