Â
Down 3-1 entering the inning, the Raiders (2-5) sent 11 men to the plate in the fourth, tallying the six runs on six hits across three different Western Kentucky (5-2) pitchers in the inning.
Â
After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases to start the inning, Konner Piotto singled home the first run of the frame and was followed up moments later by Alec Sayre's RBI single. With the bases still loaded, Justin McConnell drew a walk to plate another run before Quincy Hamilton brought home a run via his fielders' choice ground ball. Tyler Black got the RBI single train rolling again before Zane Harris, hitting for the second time in the inning, drove home the final run of the frame with his own single back up the middle.
Â
Following back-to-back scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, Western Kentucky pushed across two runs in the seventh to cut into the Raider lead, but Jake Schrand got a swinging strikeout to end the inning and leave two Hilltopper runners stranded to stop the threat.
Wright State added two final runs in the top of the eighth to push the lead back out to four, first when Gehrig Anglin singled and scored on Alex Alder's RBI groundout before Julian Greenwell delivered an RBI double into left center field later in the inning.
Â
Harris and Greenwell each had three-hit games for the Raiders, while Piotto was the lone Raider with two RBI as part of his two-hit afternoon. Alders and McConnell each had doubles along with Greenwell.
Â
Austin Cline picked up his first win of the season, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits while strikeout out five batters. Schrand earned the rare three inning save, striking out three over that stretch.
Â
Western Kentucky's Aristotle Peter was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in three-plus innings of work. Jack Wilson, Ray Zuberer and Davis Sims each had two hits for the Hilltoppers in the loss.
Â
Wright State is back in action next weekend, when they travel back down south to take on Auburn in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday night with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
