Raidergang unveils 2021 schedule

DAYTON/INDIANAPOLIS – The Wright State baseball team has released its 2021 schedule, thanks to the announcement of the Horizon League schedule by the League office and announcements of a pair of non-conference series with SEC opponents.

Wright State opens the season with back-to-back SEC opponents, beginning the year with three games at Vanderbilt before a weekend set at Alabama. The Horizon League schedule begins in March and sees teams play four-game series with single games on Fridays and Sundays with Saturday doubleheaders.

The Raiders, who played 10 of their 15 games against nationally ranked opponents last season, had won four of their last five contests – including a series win at then-No. 11 Tennessee – heading into the first Horizon League series of the year against Milwaukee. That series, and the remainder of the season, was put on hold and ultimately canceled due to the pandemic.

Wright State made the most of the shortened season, with three of its six wins coming against ranked programs, including a 10-3 victory at then-No. 1 Louisville on February 19. The Raiders won the series opener at then-No. 11 Tennessee on March 6 by a 5-4 score and capped the weekend and earned the series win with a 6-3 victory on March 8. Wright State's two wins at Tennessee turned out to be the Volunteers' only two losses.

Horizon League championship information, including dates and format, will be announced by the League once finalized.

Vanderbilt (Feb. 19-21, Nashville, TN) Vanderbilt was 13-5 in the shortened 2020 season, including an 11-1 mark at home. Wright State and Vanderbilt have met twice previously, both in Nashville, during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Alabama (Feb. 26-28, Tuscaloosa, AL) Alabama started the shortened 2020 season with a 16-1 record, including a 12-1 record at home. Wright State and Alabama have never met on the diamond.

Northern Kentucky (March 5-7, Nischwitz Stadium | April 23-25, Highland Heights, KY) Northern Kentucky was 0-17 in the shortened 2020 season, while the Raiders took five of the seven meetings in 2019, including in the opening round of the 2019 Horizon League Championship.

Youngstown State (March 12-14, Nischwitz Stadium | March 26-28, Youngstown, OH) Youngstown State started the shortened 2020 season 7-7 overall. The Raiders were 4-2 in the 2019 season series between the teams.

UIC (March 19-21, Chicago, IL) UIC was 4-12 during the shortened 2020 season, with an 0-10 mark in true road games and a combined 4-2 mark in home/neutral contests. Wright State won five of the six meetings during the 2019 regular season but saw UIC win in the 2019 Horizon League Championship meeting.

Purdue Fort Wayne (April 9-11, Nischwitz Stadium | April 30-May 2, Fort Wayne, IN) Fort Wayne started the shortened 2020 season with a 5-10 record with all games coming away from home, including a 3-9 record in true road games. A newcomer to the Horizon League, Wright State and Fort Wayne have met four times previously with the last meeting coming in 2006 (four Fort Wayne wins).

Oakland (April 16-18, Rochester, MI | May 14-16, Nischwitz Stadium) Oakland was 2-10, all away from home, in the shortened 2020 season. Wright State swept the season series against the Golden Grizzlies in 2019.

Milwaukee (May 7-9, Nischwitz Stadium) Milwaukee started the shortened 2020 season with a 1-14 mark, all away from home. Wright State and Milwaukee split the regular season meetings in 2019 with each side taking two of three at its home park, before Milwaukee defeated the Raiders in the 2019 Horizon League Championship.
