The Wright State baseball team saw its 12-game winning streak snapped on Friday night, as Youngstown State's seven run fifth inning proved to be the difference in the Raiders' 12-10 loss to open the Horizon League weekend series.
Â
The loss was the first Horizon League defeat of the season for the Raiders (12-6, 12-1 HL), who had opened League play with three four-game series sweeps, including against Youngstown State at Nischwitz Stadium two weekends ago. The Raiders and the Penguins (9-11, 4-5 HL) continue the four-game series with a pair of games on Saturday, with game one starting at 1 p.m. ET with game two to follow.
Â
For Horizon League doubleheaders throughout the season, the first game will be a seven inning game with the second game being a nine inning game. If game one of the doubleheader goes extra innings then game two becomes a seven inning game.
Â
On Friday night, Wright State got on the board in the top of the first with a pair of RBI singles from
Sammy Sass and
Alec Sayre, only to see Youngstown State tie the game with two runs in the second and then add two more runs in the fourth. The Raiders cut into the deficit with
Alex Alders' solo home run down the left field line in the top of the fifth, but the Penguins tallied seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the game open.
Â
Wright State didn't go down without a fight, plating six runs in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer from
Tyler Black to right-center field and a two RBI single from
Gehrig Anglin to pull to within two runs at 11-9. Youngstown State responded with a single run in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to three before the Raiders plated a final run in the top of the eighth on a Sass RBI double to right-center.
Â
The Raiders left eight men on base over the course of the night, including stranding the bases loaded to end the six-run seventh inning. After the three-run shot from Black and Anglin's two-run single,
Konner Piotto draw a bases loaded walk to pull Wright State to within two runs with the bases still loaded and two outs, but
Damon Dues flew out to left field to end the scoring push. Wright State also left one runner stranded in both the sixth and eighth innings while trying to pull back even on the scoreboard.
Â
Jake Schrand was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) and nine hits in four innings while adding six strikeouts. Youngstown State's Colin Clark earned the win after tossing 6.2 innings and allowing six runs and six hits to the Raider offense.
Alec Sayre finished with three hits to pace the offense, while Sass was the only other Raider to record multiple hits. Black tallied three RBI via his homer, while Sass, Anglin and Alders all drove in two runs. Youngstown State collected 17 total hits and had three players with three-hit games and three more with two hits each. Nick Caruso finished 3-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Penguins.
