The Wright State baseball team scored in five innings on Friday afternoon, with multiple runs in three different frames, on the way to an 11-5 series-opening victory over Northern Kentucky to begin Horizon League play at Nischwitz Stadium.
Â
The Raiders (1-5, 1-0 HL) and the Norse (2-6, 0-1 HL) continue the four-game series with a pair of games on Saturday, with game one starting at 12 p.m. ET with game two to follow.
Â
For Horizon League doubleheaders throughout the season, the first game will be a 7 inning game with the second game being a 9 inning game. If game one of the doubleheader goes extra innings then game two becomes a 7 inning game.
Â
Bradley Brehmer is set to get the start for the Raiders in Saturday's first game, with
Alex Theis climbing the hill for the game two start.
Â
Friday afternoon, Wright State used the long ball early, with
Gehrig Anglin delivering a two-run homer down the left field line to start the scoring before
Quincy Hamilton connected on a homer of his own, this one a solo shot to right, in the third.
Â
After NKU got on the board with an RBI single in the top of the fourth, Anglin delivered his second bomb of the afternoon in the bottom of the frame, a solo, opposite field shot towards the deepest part of The Nisch in right-center field.
Â
The Raiders stretched the game open in the seventh and eighth frames, tallying seven runs over the two innings thanks to RBI singles from
Damon Dues and
Tyler Black, along with a two-run single from
Zane Harris, in the seventh before Black connected on a two-run triple and later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Â
Black finished the afternoon with three hits, while both he and Anglin paced the offensive attack with three RBI each. Hamilton added two hits of his own, while
Justin McConnell (double in the seventh) and
Jay Luikart also tallied hits.
Â
Reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Week
Jake Schrand (1-2) struck out 12 Northern Kentucky batters over 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits and two walks with a pair of hit batters on the way to his first win of the season.
Jake Shirk (1.1 innings) and
Brock Nartker (1 inning) combined for four strikeouts out of the bullpen for the Raiders in relief.
Â
Griffin Doersching led the Norse with three hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth, while Sam Hedges and Jayden Wakeham each had two hits. NKU starter Ben Gerl took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with four walks over five innings.
