DENVER/DAYTON – Wright State right-handed pitcher Jake Schrand was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 269th overall pick in the ninth round of Major League Baseball's 2021 first-year player draft on Monday afternoon, becoming the third Raider player selected in this year's draft along with Tyler Black and Quincy Hamilton.
Â
Schrand, a Cincinnati native, becomes the third Raider in the Marlins' system, joining former standouts Peyton Burdick (third round) and J.D. Orr (10th round) as Miami prospects. Both Burdick and Orr were selected by the Marlins in the 2019 MLB Draft. Overall, Schrand becomes the 16th Raider draftee since the 2015 MLB Draft.
Â
A four-year player for the Raiders, Schrand pitched out of the bullpen for his first three seasons before becoming Wright State's Friday night starter in 2021. He tallied a 7-4 record with three saves in 42 career appearances, including 14 starts (all in 2021) in 104.2 total innings of work with 136 strikeouts. This spring as a starter, he was 5-4 in 68-plus innings, recording 92 strikeouts – a rate of 12.12 per nine innings. Overall, Schrand allowed only 111 hits in 411 total at-bats in four seasons on the mound.
Â
As a reliever, Schrand allowed just eight hits off of him in both 2019 and 2020, leading Wright State in ERA both seasons as he finished with an 0.82 ERA in 2019 and a 1.26 ERA in 2020. In 2021 as a starter, his 92 total strikeouts were inside the Top 100 nationally as his 68.1 innings pitched nearly doubled his three-year total as a reliever.
