DAYTON – Battling frigid conditions and high winds, the Wright State golf team closed out its fall schedule with a third-place finish at the Flyer Invitational at NCR Country Club while Tyler Goecke finished second individually.
Â
The Raiders, who led after 36 holes, battled blustery, windy, and wet conditions that kept the temperatures in the mid-to-low 40s throughout the two-day event as they scrambled to a 41-over team score for that third-place finish behind only No. 2-ranked Illinois (+29) and No. 43 Marquette (+33). The Raiders carded scores of 293 in the first round, 297 in round two that began Monday and finished up on Tuesday morning and then a final round 303.
Â
Goecke finished the tournament at two-over, carding a five-over final round 76 after an opening round of two-under (69) and a one-under 70 in his second round. He tallied 11 total birdies, but just two in the final 18 holes. Mikkel Mathiesen finished in a tie for 11th at eight-over for the tournament, tallying a one-over 72 in his opening round before a four-over 75 and a three-over final round 74 with just three birdies overall as he collected 41 pars across his three rounds.
Â
Adam Horn, competing as an individual, finished tied for 32nd at 16-over after rounds of 75 (+4), 77 (+6) and 77 (+6), while Cole Corder finished two back of him at 18-over in a tie for 44th following rounds of 72 (+1), 81 (+10) and 78 (+7). Davis Root (t55, +20) and Shane Ochs (t59, +21) were also on the Raider card, with Root playing 80 (+9), 77 (+6) and 77 (+6) while Ochs tallied rounds of 82 (+11), 75 (+4) and 77 (+6).
Â
Wright State finishes the fall with team victories at Earl Yestingmeier Invitational back in September and the Xavier Invitational in mid-October, while also finishing second at the Golfweek Fall Challenge and fourth at the Georgia State Invitational. Mathieson won the individual title at the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational while Goecke captured top individual honors at the Xavier Invitational.'
