
Root finishes tied for third individually to lead Raiders

LAREDO, TX – Davis Root's top five finish paced the Wright State golf team in its spring-opening tournament as the Raiders finished sixth as a group at the Border Olympics in Texas.

Root, who was one-under with one hole remaining in his second round that was halted Monday due to darkness, opened his Tuesday with a birdie on the par three fifth hole to complete his second round scorecard before playing a bogey-free final 18 holes with a pair of birdies as he carded a two-under final round 70 to finish tied for third individually at two-under for the tournament, two shots back of individual winner Santiago De La Fuente of Houston.

Mikkel Mathiesen carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday, tallying a trio of birdies but adding a double-bogey on the seventh hole, as he finished tied for 14th at three-over for the tournament, while Tyler Goecke had a double bogey of his own and three bogeys to go with a birdie on the par five 17th on the way to a four-over final round 76 as he ended the week eight-over and tied for 34th.

Cole Corder turned in his best round of the tournament as he carded a two-over 74 behind four birdies in Tuesday's final round to finished at 18-over (t73rd), while Shane Ochs ended his week with a seven-over 79 on Tuesday to finish at 23-over (85th).

Wright State now has four more regular season tournaments this spring before the Horizon League Championship in late April, with the Loyola Intercollegiate next on the docket as the Raiders travel to Goodyear, Arizona for tournament action February 26-28.
