Raiders face back-to-back midweek tests

DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program will face two midweek contests on the road this week, taking on Xavier in the Joe Nuxhall Classic finals at UC Baseball Stadium on Tuesday, April 11, followed by a meeting at Toledo on Wednesday, April 12. Wednesday's matchup between the Raiders and Rockets will broadcast live on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
The Raiders are coming off three consecutive losses on the road at Milwaukee. Wright State fell 6-3 in the series and 9-2 in the finale. WSU led 5-3 in the top of the 10th inning in game two of the series, but the Panthers collected a walk-off win with three runs in the bottom of the frame. 

Julian Greenwell paced Wright State with three multi-hit games over the weekend, batting .500 with one double, one home run, four RBI, and two runs scored. Andrew Patrick finished with team-leading marks in homers (2), runs (5), and stolen bases (2). On the mound, Tristan Haught fired three scoreless innings with two strikeouts in his lone appearance. 

HISTORY VS. XAVIER
Wright State leads the all-time series 39-33. The Raiders fell to the Xavier 16-8 at home in the first meeting between the two schools on March 29. Sammy Sass batted 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in the loss, while Boston Smith launched a three-run homer for his lone hit of the game. 

SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS
Xavier is 20-12 overall and 45th in the NCAA Division I RPI rankings under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Billy O'Connor. The Musketeers enter Tuesday's matchup on a 10-game winning streak, which began at West Virginia on March 26.

Junior catcher Matthew DePrey is batting .318 with team-best marks in doubles (8), homers (10), and slugging percentage (.606). Graduate outfielder Andrew Walker has driven in 31 runs and is 14-for-15 on stolen base attempts. The pitching staff has given up three or fewer runs seven times amid Xavier's current 10-game winning streak. 

HISTORY VS. TOLEDO
Wright State leads the all-time series 19-10. The Raiders have won nine of the last 10 meetings against the Rockets, including four in a row dating back to 2016. The teams last met in March 2023, which ended in a 6-2 victory for WSU. Josh Laisure, Alex Theis, Calvin Mitchell, Chris Gallagher, and Joey Valentine recorded scoreless outings in the win. 

SCOUTING THE ROCKETS
Toledo dropped to 14-16 on the season after enduring a three-game sweep versus Ohio last weekend. The Rockets boast a 3-4 record at home, highlighted by a series win over Akron and a midweek victory over Youngstown State.

As a team, Toledo tops the MAC with 49 home runs while ranking third in fielding percentage (.978) and third in slugging percentage (.471). Junior infielder Jeron Williams leads the team in batting average (.397), hits (52), doubles (8), triples (3), and stolen bases (24).

Andrew Patrick tops the Horizon League in triples (3) and runs scored (34) while possessing top-five conference marks in doubles (2nd, 12), home runs (3rd, 6), slugging percentage (2nd, .664), OPS (2nd, 1.108), hits (2nd, 39), stolen bases (3rd, 12), and hit by pitch (3rd, 7). The Hilliard, Ohio native has recorded a team-leading six three-hit performances. 

GREENY IS BACK
Julian Greenwell has recorded five consecutive multi-hit performances for the Raiders, climbing his batting average from .174 to .253 in the stretch. The junior has also driven in one or more runs in his last four games. 

SPEED KILLS
The Raiders rank 69th nationally and second in the Horizon League with 46 stolen bases. Gehrig Anglin and Andrew Patrick have swiped a team-high 12 bases. 

NEWCOMER SHOWING OUT
Cincinnati transfer Boston Smith has reached base in a team-leading 20 games for the Raiders. On the season, he is batting .300 with eight doubles, one triple, four homers, 17 RBI, and 16 runs scored in 27 games (20 starts). The Vandalia, Ohio native sits sixth in the Horizon League in slugging percentage (.575) and OPS (.977).

Starting pitcher Sebastian Gongora — the preseason Pitcher of the Year by D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game USA — is 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 40.2 innings of work. The redshirt sophomore has allowed three or fewer earned runs in five-plus innings in seven of his eight starts.
