DAYTON – The Wright State golf team cruised to its third straight team title at the Wright State Invitational on Monday afternoon at Heatherwoode Golf Club, with Mikkel Mathiesen capturing the individual crown in a playoff as four Raiders finished inside the top five individually.
Â
Mathiesen went to a playoff with teammate Shane Ochs to decide the individual title, battling it out over five extra holes before Mathiesen's par on the 18th hole clinched the individual win.
Â
Wright State now gets set to defend its title at the Horizon League Championship next week at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, while Mathiesen will try for his second-straight individual title as well.
Â
Despite chilly temperatures and heavy winds Monday, the Raiders turned in a team round of 295 to finish +11 on the day and 882 (+30) for the tournament in the tough conditions, 18 shots better than second-place Cleveland State, one of five Horizon League teams Wright State will see again next week in Florida.
Â
Mathiesen entered Monday two shots back of the lead and tallied a pair of birdies on the front nine holes before burying a 35-foot putt for birdie on the 18th for a two-over 73 to force the extra holes. Ochs, the 36-hole leader, carded a four-over final round 78 and bounced back from an early triple bogey to play even par over his final nine holes, connecting on an eight-foot putt for a par on the 18th to go to the playoff.
Â
Playing as an individual, Adam Horn finished third overall at five-over after his final round 72 (+1), working around a double bogey in the middle of his Monday thanks to a trio of birdies over a four hole stretch on the front nine. Tyler Goecke carded a one-over 72 of his own to finish fourth at nine-over for the tournament, scattering two birdies and three bogeys across his scorecard. Cole Corder wrapped up his play with a five-over 76 to finish in a tie for 13th at 16-over for the tournament, with Davis Root ending a shot back at 17-over overall and tied for 16th following his final round 75 (+4).
Â
Brock Rumpke, also playing as an individual, tallied an 11-over round to finish in a tie for 53rd at 28-over for the tournament, while Andrew Flynn, who was disqualified after inadvertently playing an incorrect ball during Sunday's opening round, carded a final round nine-over tally in the conditions.
Â
Wright State heads south for the Horizon League Championship, with 18 holes daily next Sunday, Monday and Tuesday after a practice round on Saturday at Mission Inn Resort & Club's El Campeon course.
