Patrick’s ninth-inning slam lifts Raiders over ‘Dons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Andrew Patrick launched a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, lifting the Wright State baseball program to a 6-4 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday at Mastodon Field.
The Raiders improved to 21-17 overall and 11-5 against Horizon League opponents, while PFW dropped to 10-29 on the season and 6-10 in conference play. The three-game series will resume at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Indiana Wesleyan's Wildcat Baseball Field in Marion, Ind.
Sammy Sass led Wright State offensively with a double, a homer, a walk, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. Patrick's home run with his lone hit of the day, while Jay Luikart drove in two runs on a single. Dane Thomas reached base three times on a single and two walks, in addition to scoring twice.
Sebastian Gongora collected a quality start on the mound after holding Purdue Fort Wayne to three runs on seven hits and two walks while punching out seven batters in 6.2 innings. Jay Luikart fired a scoreless ninth inning en route to his fifth save of the year.
The Mastodons jumped in front with a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning, but Sammy Sass evened the score at 1-all with an RBI double in the top of the fourth.
PFW answered back with consecutive two-out RBI hits in the bottom of the fourth, resulting in a 3-1 deficit for the Raiders. However, Wright State loaded the bases on three walks in the top of the sixth, and Jay Luikart followed with a game-tying two-out, two-run single.
Sass' hot day at the plate continued in the top of the eighth, as he gave the Raiders their first lead of the game with a leadoff home run. Purdue Fort Wayne responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame, tying the league contest for the third time in five frames.
Dane Thomas kept WSU alive with a two-out infield single in the top of the ninth. Patrick followed with the eventual game-winning roundtrip.
Luikart retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal Wright State's fourth consecutive win in conference action.
