Baseball heads to Purdue Fort Wayne for three-game series

DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program travels to Purdue Fort Wayne for a three-game series in Horizon League play from April 21-23. Friday and Sunday will take place at PFW's Mastodon Field. Saturday's game will occur at Indiana Wesleyan's Wildcat Baseball Field in Marion, Ind. Live stats will be available all weekend.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State is coming off an 8-3 loss against Dayton at Day Air Ballpark on Tuesday. The Flyers raced out to a 7-1 advantage in the midweek meeting, which was too much for the Raiders to overcome. Sammy Sass led Wright State at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Julian Greenwell finished with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. WSU's bullpen gave up just one run, no earned, in 5.1 innings, recording five strikeouts while giving up five hits. Ty Roder fired two perfect innings, while Josh Laisure punched out two batters in 1.2 innings of scoreless action.
Last weekend, the Raiders swept Youngstown State in Horizon League play. WSU earned an 11-6 win in the series opener and a 10-6 win in the finale. Bottom Smith's two-out, two-run walk-off double lifted Wright State to a 4-3 victory in the second game of the series.
HISTORY VS. PFW
Wright State is ahead 10-6 in the all-time series versus Purdue Fort Wayne. The Raiders won two out of three games in the first meeting between the two schools in March 2023. WSU dropped the series opener 12-10 but followed with back-to-back wins by final scores of 6-2 and 13-4, respectively. Offensively, Wright State batted .330 as a team with 11 extra-base hits and 29 runs scored. The pitching staff held the Mastodons to a combined nine hits while tallying 22 strikeouts in the series' last two games.

Purdue Fort Wayne is 10-28 overall and 6-9 against Horizon League opponents under the direction of fourth-year head coach Doug Schreiber. The 'Dons boast series victories over Northern Kentucky and Youngstown State in addition to a midweek win at Michigan State.
Graduate infielder Braedon Blackford has been a standout player for PFW, as he tops the Horizon League with 11 homers and possesses top-five conference marks in RBI (39), runs (33), slugging percentage (.613), and OPS (.999). Senior infielder Cade Nelis leads the team in batting average (.313), on-base percentage (.439), and walks (26). The Mastodon pitching staff ranks fifth out of six HL teams in ERA (8.19) and has allowed double-digit runs on 15 occasions.

Andrew Patrick tops the Horizon League in runs scored (41) while possessing top-five conference marks in doubles (2nd, 12), triples (2nd, 3), slugging percentage (2nd, .692), OPS (2nd, 1.136), stolen bases (2nd, 16), home runs (3rd, 9), hits (3rd, 45), and hit by pitch (4th, 8). The Hilliard, Ohio native has recorded a team-leading seven three-hit performances and has a pair of two-home run, five RBI games.

Julian Greenwell has recorded eight multi-hit performances over his last 11 games, climbing his batting average from .174 to .292. The junior is slashing .477/.540/.932 in the stretch with seven doubles, two triples, three homers, 12 RBI, and 12 runs scored. He has also driven in one or more runs in nine of his last 10 games.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Five Raiders have collected Horizon League weekly honors through nine weeks in the 2023 campaign. Julian Greenwell was the most recent recipient, as he earned HL Batter of the Week last Tuesday after slashing .455/.538/1.045 with five doubles, one triple, two homers, six runs batted in, and six runs scored over five games, helping the Raiders to a 4-1 record and a three-game sweep over Youngstown State.
