FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Wright State baseball program defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 11-5 to complete the road series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
The Raiders improved to 23-17 overall and 13-5 against Horizon League opponents, while PFW dropped to 10-31 on the season and 6-12 in conference play.
The Wright State offense totaled eight extra-base hits, five walks, and five stolen bases, scoring in six different frames, including five in a row from the top of the second to the top of the sixth inning.
Julian Greenwell drove in a career-high five runs on two homers, while
Patrick Fultz batted 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and three RBI.
Avery Fisher finished with a team-leading four hits to go along with an RBI, two runs, and two stolen bases.
Jay Luikart went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs, and a walk.
Andrew Patrick recorded an RBI single and two stolen bases.
Starting pitcher
Luke Stofel improved to 2-3 on the season after limiting Purdue Fort Wayne to three runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters in 5.2 innings of action.
Josh Laisure punched out seven batters and allowed two runs in the remaining 3.1 innings of action en route to his second collegiate save.
The Raiders turned two double plays defensively but committed one error, leading to an unearned run scored by the Mastodons in the sixth inning.
The duo of Greenwell and Fultz combined for eight RBI in the opening five innings of play, which resulted in an 8-2 advantage for the Raiders. Greenwell had a three-run homer and a two-run homer, while Fultz had a solo roundtrip, an RBI double, and an RBI single in the span.
Fisher led off the top of the sixth with an infield single, reached second on a PFW error, stole third, and scored on an RBI single by Patrick to extend Wright State's edge to 9-2.
The 'Dons closed their deficit to 9-4 with an RBI double in the sixth and a solo homer in the eighth. However, WSU cushioned its lead to 11-4 with two runs on a sacrifice fly by
Luke Arnold and an RBI single by Fisher in the top of the ninth.
Laisure held PFW to one run in the bottom of the ninth to seal Wright State's sixth consecutive win in conference play.
