Wright State is coming off a three-game series at Purdue Fort Wayne. Andrew Patrick's two-out, two-run blast in the ninth inning of the series opener lifted the Raiders to a 6-4 victory. WSU plated double-digit runs in the following two games to seal the road sweep.
The Raiders hit .288 with 15 doubles, seven homers, and 33 RBI in the stretch, led by Patrick's .385/.467/1.077 slash line. WSU also went 12-for-13 on stolen-base attempts. The starting pitching trio of Sebastian Gongora, Jake Shirk, and Luke Stofel tossed a combined 19.1 innings, striking out 19 batters while allowing ten runs. Jay Luikart and Josh Laisure both collected saves out of the bullpen.
HISTORY VS. OAKLAND
The Raiders hold a 50-13 all-time record versus Oakland, which includes a five-game winning streak dating back to May 2022. In late March, Wright State earned a three-game sweep over the Golden Grizzlies at Nischwitz Stadium. Sammy Sass' two-run walk-off home run lifted WSU to a 10-8 victory in the series opener. WSU outscored OU 22-1 in Sunday's doubleheader to secure the sweep.
Wright State also met Oakland in the 2022 Horizon League Championship title game, defeating the Golden Grizzlies 24-0. WSU set single-game tournament records in runs scored, largest shutout margin (24), doubles (8), and RBI (23) in the blowout victory.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland enters the weekend 18-23 overall and 10-8 against Horizon League opponents. The Golden Grizzlies climbed to third in the conference standings after securing a three-game sweep over Youngstown State last weekend. OU also boasts series victories against Southern Indiana, Milwaukee, and Youngstown State.
The Golden Grizzlies are second in the HL in doubles (85), walks (210), sacrifice bunts (23), and sacrifice flies (20) while ranking third in runs per game (6.4), on-base percentage (.377), slugging percentage (.410), and stolen bases (64). Senior outfielder Ian Cleary leads the team in batting average (.331), doubles (14), and RBI (29). Starting pitcher Hunter Pidek has compiled a 3.92 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 43.2 innings of work.
LIVING UP TO THE HYPE
Starting pitcher Sebastian Gongora — the preseason Pitcher of the Year by D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game USA — is 5-1 with a 2.95 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 55.0 innings of work. The redshirt sophomore tops the HL in ERA, opposing batting average (.237), and wins (T-1st). He has racked up four quality starts against conference opponents.

Andrew Patrick has placed himself into contention for Horizon League Player of the Year, as he tops the conference in homers (12), runs scored (46), and slugging percentage (.707) while ranking second in OPS (1.143), hits (50), triples (3), stolen bases (18), sacrifice flies (4), and hit by pitch (9). The Hilliard, Ohio native has recorded a team-leading eight three-hit performances and three multi-homer games.
GREENY IS BACK
Julian Greenwell has recorded nine multi-hit performances during his 14-game reached base streak, climbing his batting average from .174 to .292. The junior is slashing .444/.508/.944 in the stretch with eight doubles, two triples, five homers, 17 RBI, and 15 runs scored. On the season, Greenwell sits fifth in the Horizon League with a .568 slugging percentage.
SPEED KILLS
The Raiders rank 26th nationally and first in the Horizon League with 78 stolen bases. Andrew Patrick has swiped a team-high 18 bases, while Gehrig Anglin has stolen 12 bases in 27 games. Avery Fisher is a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts, and Dane Thomas is 9-for-10 in the category.
TEAM GUYS
Wright State ranks 21st in the country with 24 sacrifice flies. Andrew Patrick has totaled a team-best four sacrifice flies, while Sammy Sass, Gehrig Anglin, and Jay Luikart have three.
BREAKOUT GAME
Luke Arnold batted 4-for-4 with two doubles, 4 RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base in Wright State's 17-6 victory at Purdue Fort Wayne last Saturday. In the outing, he broke career-high marks in hits, doubles, and RBI.
HE GETS ON BASE
Dane Thomas ranks third in the Horizon League with a .471 on-base percentage. The redshirt freshman is batting .307 on the year with five doubles and 12 RBI to go along with 16 walks, nine HBP, and nine stolen bases.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Five Raiders have collected Horizon League weekly honors through nine weeks in the 2023 campaign. Julian Greenwell was the most recent recipient, as he earned HL Batter of the Week on April 18 after slashing .455/.538/1.045 with five doubles, one triple, two homers, six runs batted in, and six runs scored over five games, helping the Raiders to a 4-1 record and a three-game sweep over Youngstown State.
