Wright State baseball alum Jesse Scholtens (2015-16) has been called up to the Chicago White Sox, the organization announced on Friday, April 7.Â
Â
Scholtens becomes the second Raider on an active Major League Baseball roster, joining Gold Glove catcher Sean Murphy of the Atlanta Braves. The big-league promotion marks the fourth time two Wright State alums have played in the MLB simultaneously.Â
The Fairfield, Calif., native spent two seasons with the Raidergang, compiling a career 17-5 record with a 3.01 ERA and 167 strikeouts over 200.1 innings pitched. In his final year at Wright State, he earned Third Team ABCA/Rawlings All-America, First Team All-Mideast Region, and First Team All-Horizon League honors.Â
Notably, he tossed the first perfect game in Wright State baseball history in the Raiders 1-0 victory over Dayton during the 2016 season, striking out a career-high 12 batters in the process.Â
Scholtens was selected in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. He was picked up by the White Sox in January 2023 after six seasons with the Padres organization. The right-hander has compiled 27 wins, 608 strikeouts, and five saves over 154 appearances (105 starts) in his minor league career. In 2022, he played for the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas, going 4-4 with a 4.10 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 37 appearances (15 starts).
Dating back to 1976, Wright State has produced over 70 professional players, including six that have reached the MLB. Alec Sayre was the latest Raider to join the club, as the Minnesota Twins selected him in the 17th round of the 2022 MLB Draft.Â
Scholtens joins the White Sox for their three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road, starting today at 4:12 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
Â
Prior to today's series opener at Pittsburgh, the #WhiteSox designated right-handed pitcher José Ruiz for assignment and selected the contract of right-hander Jesse Scholtens from Class AAA Charlotte.
