DAYTON – Eight different players found the scoring column on Wednesday night but the Wright State women's basketball team fell 72-61 to visiting Cleveland State inside the Nutter Center.
Wright State (11-8, 5-3 Horizon) now looks to regroup before its next contest, a Saturday afternoon meeting at Northern Kentucky. Saturday's game is set for a 4 p.m. start and fans can follow the action via ESPN+ and live stats.
On Wednesday, Cleveland State (16-3, 7-1 Horizon) took control early and jumped out to a lead after the opening quarter and later led by 19 at the half, but the Raiders never quit, outscoring the visitors 31-23 in the second half. Wright State used an 11-2 lead over a nearly six-minute stretch from late in the third quarter and into the opening minutes of the fourth to cut the margin to 11 points with 6:35 to play, but were unable to get any closer as Cleveland State scored seven of the next nine points to put the game away.
Layne Ferrell finished with a team-best 15 points on 50 percent shooting, connecting on three three-pointers and she added two assists, two steals, two blocks and a rebound to her final stat line.
Lauren Scott also notched double digits with 10 points of her own, while
Kacee Baumhower finished with nine points and
Alexis Hutchison chipped in eight points.
Jada Tate pulled down a game-high nine rebounds off the bench for the Raiders.
Wright State shot 36 percent for the night (20-of-56) while connecting on just 6-of-27 three-point attempts (22 percent). The Raiders stayed within striking distance thanks to a 15-of-16 mark (94 percent) from the free throw stripe. Cleveland State finished with a 60 percent shooting mark (29-of-48) from the floor and was just 1-of-8 from three-point range. The visitors were 13-of-21 (62 percent) at the free throw stripe and finished with 50 points from the paint.
Colbi Maples finished with 17 points to lead five Cleveland State players with double digit scoring nights, with the visitors getting only two other points from outside of the double-digit scorers in the win.
