Raiders drop game one against Oakland

DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team fell short to Oakland 19-1 on Thursday afternoon. The Raiders are now 13-12 on the season and 4-3 in the Horizon League. The two teams will face each other again on Friday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. in Nischwitz Stadium. Fans can keep up with the game on ESPN+ or through live stats.

Wright State struggled at bat with only one run on five hits against their two strikeouts in the midweek series opener. The lone Raider run came from a ninth inning homer by pinch hitter Gus Gregory, his second on the season. Jay Luikart added the first hit for the Raiders, with a single to right field in the first. Patrick Fultz added his hit in the fifth with a single up the middle. After Gregory's homer in the seventh, Fusselman and Manley each added a single.

Oakland took an early 13-0 lead in the first three innings, adding nine runs in the first and four in the third. The Golden Grizzlies added one run in the fourth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh.

The Raider pitching staff finished the day striking out five batters while walking seven and allowing three to reach base on a hit by pitch. Wright State starting pitcher Jake Shirk (1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing five hits on seven runs with one walk in one third of an inning on the mound. Wes Earles notably struck out two batters in his one and a third innings of work.

Earning the win for Oakland was starting pitcher Hunter Pidek (2-4). Pidek pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks. The Golden Grizzlies finished the day with 20 hits on 19 runs with seven walks against their five strikeouts. They were led by Brandon Nigh with three hits in his five at bats, including one of the two Oakland doubles, tallying four RBI.
