Women’s Basketball Set for Home Opener Against Wilberforce

DAYTON- The Wright State women's basketball team (1-1) will open the home portion of its 2025-26 schedule Wednesday night as the Wilberforce Bulldogs visit the Nutter Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Wilberforce ended their 2024-25 campaign with an 11-16 overall record and a 6-12 mark in conference play. So far in the 2025-26 campaign, the Bulldogs are 1-2 with a 75-39 homecoming win over Bryant & Stratton.
Sophomore Laniya Early leads the team with 12.3 points per game and is second with 5.3 rebounds. Transfer guard Asia Cochran, a sophomore from Detroit, has scored at least nine points in all three games and is second on the team with 12.0 points per game. Junior Makaia Smith leads the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg) and steals (8), while scoring 10.3 points per game, which is good for third on the team. Smith shoots a team-best 54.5 percent from the field.
HISTORY VS. WILBERFORCE
Wednesday will be the second-ever meeting between Wright State and Wilberforce. The Raiders came out on top in their only other meeting, 86-34 in the 1980-81 season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wright State women's basketball team earned the first win of its 2025-26 campaign Friday night, defeating Tennessee State 85-80.
Breezie Williams stole the show in Nashville, setting a new career high in points with 27. After being held to zero points in the season opener, the senior erupted for a new career high in points, shooting an impressive 55% from the floor and 60% from beyond the three-point line. To go along with the career high in points, Williams also recorded five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in 32 minutes.
The Raiders opened the game firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 12-6 lead early in the first quarter. The Tigers would take a five-point lead into the second quarter. Tennessee State led for all 10 minutes of the second quarter, outscoring the Raiders 21-20 in that frame.
Wright State dominated the third quarter and quickly erased its six-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Tigers 23-11 in the quarter. The Raiders held Tennessee State scoreless for the first three minutes of the half. WSU took the lead back with 3:37 left in the quarter and never gave it back.
The Raiders kept their foot on the gas, scoring 23 points in the final frame to keep the game out of reach for the Tigers. Tennessee chipped away at the Wright State lead, getting it down to as low as four, but Wright State responded right away, extending the lead back to six.
RAIDER RETURNERS
Wright State returns eight letter winners off its 2024-25 roster, led by mainstays Claire Henson and Lauren Scott. Also returning are Olivia Brown, Chloe Chard Peloquin, Florrie Cotterill, Ellie Magestro-Kennedy, Abbie Riddle, and Rylee Sagester. The eight returns combined for 55% of the team's points and 65% of the team's assists a season ago.
Henson started in all 32 games, averaging 27.6 minutes per game…Averaged 9.8 points per game along with 5.6 rebounds per game… Had a season high of 22 points, along with nine rebounds in a 77-66 win vs Tennessee State (11/15) … Reached double-figures scoring in 15 games… Finished the season with 314 points, 180 rebounds, 71 assists, and 34 steals
Scott played in 28 games, making 23 starts and averaging 24.9 minutes per game… Averaged 7.5 points per game, shooting 35 percent from the field… Had a season-best of 15 points in a 60-52 win over Oakland (02/19)... Recorded more than one three-pointer in eight games… Reached double-figure scoring in seven games… Finished the season with 211 points, 24 rebounds, 21 assists, and 12 steals… Named a finalist for the Horizon League Sportsmanship Award... Named to the CSC Academic All-District Team. Scott was also named as one of the two Wright State representatives on the Horizon League Student Athlete Advisory Committee
NEW FACES
Transfers Breezie Williams and Grace Okih join WSU with some collegiate experience and look to make an instant impact. Also joining the Raiders are true freshmen Elaina Rager and Maja Dilen.
Williams, a senior guard from Canton, Ohio, comes to Wright State after spending the 2024-25 season at Bryant University. Last season, Williams appeared in 28 games with 25 starts for Bryant, averaging 27.6 minutes per game. She posted a 37.9% field goal percentage and shot 31.3% from beyond the arc. Williams reached double figures in 10 games, including two 20-plus-point performances, and averaged 9.6 points per game. She recorded at least one assist in 26 contests, notching a season-high five assists on two occasions, most recently against Binghamton on March 6. Williams began her collegiate career at New Hampshire, where she played in and started all but one game as a freshman. She was named to the America East All-Rookie Team and ranked among the conference leaders in steals and assists. In two seasons at UNH, she shot 36.9% from the field and averaged 8.6 points per game.
Okih, a senior from Lagos, Nigeria, comes to WSU after spending the 2024-25 season at Incarnate Word. She began her collegiate career at Jacksonville College in Jacksonville, Texas. During her sophomore season at JC, Okih averaged a double-double with 10.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, leading NJCAA Region 14 in rebounds and ranking 12th nationally in the NJCAA. She recorded eight double-doubles that season, including a career-high 22 points and 29 rebounds against Coastal Bend CC on January 22, 2024. The 6-foot-2 forward was named Region XIV All-Conference Honorable Mention and was selected as the school's Women's Basketball MVP.
SIZING UP THE 2025-26 SQUAD
The Raiders return nine players from last season while adding four newcomers (two transfers and two freshmen).
The squad features four seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen. The roster also expands not only across the nation, with four different states represented (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin) but across the globe, with three international student-athletes (England, Nigeria, Sweden).
