Golf grabs first team victory of the spring at The Jewell

BATAVIA, OH – The Wright State golf team tallied its first team tournament victory of the spring slate on Tuesday, with the Raiders defending their team title and winning The Jewell for the second straight season.

The Raiders now prepare to host the Wright State Invitational on April 13 and 14 at Heatherwoode Golf Club in a final tuneup before the Horizon League Championship April 19-21 in Florida.

Wright State opened Tuesday in a tie for second at two-under and a couple shots back of IU Indy, who was two-under after the first round. The Raiders turned in a three-over 287 final round on Tuesday to finish at five-over for the tournament, but it was enough to best IU Indy and tournament host Northern Kentucky both by one shot. IU Indy was eight-over as a group on Tuesday, while Northern Kentucky jumped a couple spots after a final round two-over card as a group.

Individually, Shane Ochs finished second at two-under, one shot back of individual champion Mason Witt of Xavier, while Ian Asch, competing as an individual, was part of a large group finishing tied for sixth at even par overall.

Ochs, who entered Tuesday at two-under and one shot back of the lead, carded a final round even par 71 with three birdies and three bogeys. He tallied birdies on holes 15 and 17 down the stretch but ended his afternoon with a bogey on 18 that proved to be the difference. Asch began the final round at one-under and saw four bogeys on his first nine holes but responded with three birdies over his final nine holes on the way to his one-over final round 72 to finish in that tie for sixth.

Timmy Hollenbeck and Adam Horn were both part of the group tied for 11th at one-over for the week, with Hollenbeck carding a two-over final round 73 and Horn jumping up the leaderboard with his one-under final round 70. Ali Berker, also competing as an individual, finished in a tie for 23rd at three-over after a one-over final round 72, while Andrew Flynn (t44) finished at six-over after a Tuesday two-over 73 and Brock Rumpke (t51) was seven-over for the tournament after a final round four-over 75.
