Stayin' Alive, Raiders Defeat ETSU, Advance to Sunday

NASHVILLE- Patrick Fultz tied the game with a solo home run in the 7th , Luke Arnold hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the 8th and Nashville-area native Chet Lax shutdown East Tennessee State down the stretch in a 7-5 victory on Saturday afternoon at the 2025 NCAA Nashville Regional.

Lax was the final of four Wright State pitchers on Saturday and tossed eight outs of perfect baseball to earn his fifth win of the season. The sophomore struck out three and got out of a seventh-inning jam and stranding a runner on third, the lefty grew up a half hour away from Nashville in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

For the second-straight game, the Raiders jumped out early. Gus Gregory hit an opposite field home run over the left field wall to make it a 1-0 game in the first. Boston Smith doubled the lead an inning later with a laser over the right field wall for his 25th of the season. Four batters later, Will Cook laced a double into the right field corner, scoring a pair to make it 4-0.

ETSU used the long ball to mount their comeback, belting three homers in the fourth and fifth inning to put the Buccaneers in front 5-4. It stayed that way until Fultz' homer in the seventh. That was thanks in part to Jarrett Heilman, the graduate student went 2.1 innings of shutout baseball before handing the ball off to Lax.

The win for the Raiders is the first in a regional since 2016, going 2-2 at the Louisville Regional. Wright State defeated Western Michigan and Ohio State before falling to host Louisville.

The victory improves the Raiders to 39-20 and WSU advance to play again on Sunday afternoon. Wright State will take on the loser of the Vanderbilt/Louisville contest. First pitch will be set for 3 pm ET/2pm CT.
