Anchors Away! Raiders Eliminate Vandy, Advance to Regional Final

NASHVILLE- Griffen Paige threw eight innings of one-hit, two-run baseball and the Raiders used a four-run first inning to eliminate the number one overall seed Vanderbilt 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field in the 2025 Nashville Regional.

The Raiders blitzed Vanderbilt out of the gate, starting with a lead-off double from Hunter Warren. He came into score on a Gus Gregory ground out. Two batters later, Boston Smith unloaded on a 2-2 pitch for his NCAA-lead tying 26th homer of the season. Luke Arnold followed with a titanic blast to left to make it 4-0.

Paige made that lead hold up, the only hit he allowed was a solo home run in the second. Paige sent the Commodores down in order in five innings as he pitched into the ninth, by far his longest outing of his career.
The Raiders added what would prove to be the game-winning run in the third. Patrick Fultz singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. That proved pivotal as Gregory dumped a single into left to plate to score Fultz and make it 5-1.

Both teams would have chances over the course of the contest. Both squads left the bases loaded as both pitching staffs allowed two hits with runners in scoring position. Vanderbilt's came in the top of the ninth, getting a bases-loaded single off the bat of Mike Mancini to make it a 5-3 game. A double off the bat of Ruston Rigdon followed, which would have easily tied the game at five, but it bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double, sending the tying run back to third base. Warren Hartzell induced a game-ending fly-out to Cam Gilkerson in right, sending the Raiders to the regional final.

The Raiders reached their first regional final since 2016 when they played Louisville, Sunday night's opponent. Wright State also made Vanderbilt the first number-one overall seed to not make a regional final.

The victory improves the Raiders to 40-20 and advance to play again on Sunday night. Wright State face the Lousiville Cardinals tonight at 9 pm ET / 8pm CT. With a win, it will force a winner-take-all game between the two schools on Monday.
