Women’s Basketball to Host Third Annual SLAMT1D Awareness Game

DAYTON- The Wright State women's basketball team (6-13, 2-6 HL) is set to host its third annual SLAMT1D awareness game on Saturday, January 17. The Raiders have once again partnered with SLAMT1D to broaden awareness of Type 1 (T1D). Tipoff in the Nutter Center is slated for 2 p.m.

SCOUTING THE NORSE
Northern Kentucky enters Saturday afternoon at third in the Horizon League standings with a 9-11 overall record and a 6-3 mark in conference play. The Norse are currently riding a six-game win streak, their longest streak since a 10-game streak in the 2021-22 campaign.
The Norse feature a dynamic freshman duo that leads not only the team in scoring but all Horizon League freshmen. Katrina Bystry leads the Norse with 13.3 points per game. Bystry excels at getting to the free-throw line with 94 makes on 119 attempts, both of which rank inside the top 10 nationally and lead all freshmen. Moody trails closely behind, averaging 10.3 points per game while leading the team in rebounds per game (6.8) and blocks per game (0.8).
HISTORY VS. NORTHERN KENTUCKY
Saturday's game will mark the 36th all-time meeting between Wright State and Northern Kentucky, a series in which the Raiders hold a narrow 19-16 advantage. The Raiders swept the season series a season ago, with the most recent win coming at Northern Kentucky on February 22, 2025, a game in which Wright State was victorious 68-62.

Ellie Magestro-Kennedy's 17 points led four Raiders in double-digits. Wednesday marked the third straight game in which Magestro-Kennedy has finished in double figures and sixth overall on the season. Claire Henson (13), Breezie Williams (12), and Maja Dilen (11). Dilen set new season and career highs in points and field goals made/attempted, finishing 5-for-9 from the floor. Henson, Grace Okih, and Olivia Brown all finish with seven rebounds. This marks a new season high for Okih and ties a career-high for Brown. Williams dished out a new career-high seven assists while playing a career-high 42 minutes.
Wright State started hot in the first half, outscoring Youngstown State 14-11 in the first quarter and 21-13 in the second quarter to jump out to an 11-point halftime lead. Henson led the Raiders with 10 points in the first 20 minutes, followed by Magestro-Kennedy with nine.
After the two teams combined to shoot 0-13 from three-point range in the first half, thanks to two quick threes from Magestro-Kennedy and Abbie Riddle. That ballooned the Wright State lead to 15 with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter. The Penguins would chip away and eventually erase the Wright State lead entering the final minute of regulation.
Wright State trailed by three entering the final 22 seconds of play. The Raiders then inbounded the ball to Williams, who fired a pass up the baseline to find Magestro-Kennedy in the corner. The redshirt sophomore nailed the corner three to tie the game at 60. Wright State then played impeccable defense in the final 20 seconds to force a Youngstown State miss and force overtime.
Youngstown State took the lead at the start of overtime and didn't look back. The Penguins outscored the Raiders 18-7 in the overtime period to lock up their 78-67 win.
Sarah Baker led the Penguins with a 25-point and 11-rebound double-double. Casey Santoro (18), Sophia Gregory (13), and Danielle Cameron (10) also finished with double-digit points to lead Youngstown State to its sixth win in Horizon League play.
WHAT IS SLAM T1D?
SLAMT1D is a nonprofit organization that supports children, families, and adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The non-profit organization strives to broaden awareness, educate others, and advocate for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and their families, while also seeking to improve Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) education among school nurses, athletic trainers, and coaches. SLAMT1D issues grants and sponsorships to other T1D organizations in addition to helping children with T1D attend camps and participate in sports activities and programs. Through donations, SLAMT1D provides better access to and more affordability of life-sustaining medications such as insulin.
ELLIE'S STORY
Wright State redshirt Sophomore, Ellie Magestro-Kennedy, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes five years ago. Daily, she is required to check blood glucose (sugar) levels, administer and adjust insulin dosages, and calculate meal carbohydrates (regular and pre- and post-workout/practice/games).
HOME SWEET HOME
Before this three-game homestand, Wright State had played six of its last eight games on the road and nine of its last 12 dating back to November 24. The Raiders feature a 5-3 record inside the Nutter Center with wins over Evansville, Oakland, Detroit Mercy, IU East, and Wilberforce.
HORIZON LEAGUE RANKS
The Raiders are fifth in the league with 1,283 points and 67.5 points per game. The Raiders are getting it done from beyond the three-point line, shooting 31.2% and knocking down 7.4 three-pointers per game, just behind Purdue Fort Wayne at 7.4 per game.
BALL SECURITY IS JOB SECURITY
The Wright State offense has been taking care of the ball this season, averaging 13.2 turnovers per game, which ranks first in the Horizon League and 29th nationally. The Raiders also boast a 3.21 turnover margin, which ranks third in the Horizon League.
BREEZIE LIKE A SUNDAY MORNING
Senior guard Breezie Williams has made an immediate impact for the Raiders, averaging 12.5 points, 2.8 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game in a Raider uniform. The Canton, Ohio, native is shooting 39.3% from the floor and 30% from three-point range. The senior is also getting it done on the defensive end of the floor, averaging 2.3 steals per game. Williams currently ranks seventh in the Horizon League in points per game (12.5) and third in steals per game (2.3). The Bryant transfer had a breakout performance on the road at Tennessee State, dropping a new career-high 27 points with three assists, three rebounds, and two blocks. She followed up her career night in Nashville with a 20-point performance against Wilberforce in just 14 minutes of action. Williams also finished one rebound and one steal short of a triple-double at Florida Atlantic, finishing with a career-high nine steals and a season-high nine rebounds. Williams has turned in a team-high five 20-point performances on the season, tying her for third in the Horizon League. Three of which have come within the last two weeks against Green Bay (20), Detroit Mercy (26), and Cleveland State (20). Williams currently sits at 997 career points, just 3 shy of passing the 1,000-career point mark.
RYLEE FROM RANGE
Redshirt sophomore guard Rylee Sagester is not only one of the best three-point shooters in the Horizon League but is one of the best in the country. The Alexandria, Ohio native is shooting a stellar 38.3% from beyond the arc, which is a team best. Sagester's 36 three-pointers place her third in the Horizon League standings. Sagester has made more than one three-pointer in 10 of the Raiders' 18 games, highlighted by a pair of games with five made threes against Wilberforce and Bellarmine.
CLAIRE CRASHING THE BOARDS
Claire Henson has been active in the paint for the Raiders, snagging 127 rebounds so far this season. Henson is fifth in the Horizon League with 6.7 rebounds per game.
Henson also has a team high of three double-doubles. The senior has recorded double-doubles against Bellarmine (13 pts. and 12 reb.), Ohio (17 pts. and 15 reb. (career-high)), and Oakland (17 pts. and 10 reb.). Fellow senior Chloe Chard Peloquin recorded the only other double-double for the Raiders in the season opener against Butler (15 pts. and 11 rebs.).
