DAYTON- The Wright State women's basketball team opened the new year with a big win in Horizon League play over Detroit Mercy, 82-71.
Wright State (6-10, 2-3 HL) will hit the road for a pair of Horizon League road tests next week. The Raiders will take on Cleveland State on Wednesday, January 7, before heading over to IU Indy on Sunday, January 11.
Breezie Williams was all over the court for the Raiders on Friday night. The senior led all players with 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting, coming up one point short of her career-high she scored at Tennessee State earlier this season. The game marks her fourth 20+ point performance and second in as many games, following her 20-point effort Tuesday night against Green Bay. Williams also led the Raiders in rebounds (6), assists (3), and steals (6). Abbie Riddle finished with double-digit points for the third consecutive game, finishing with 14 points Friday night.
The two teams exchanged early buckets before Wright State finished the first quarter on a 10-1 run to jump out to a five-point lead. The Raiders didn't take their foot off the gas to start the second, going on a quick 5-0 run when Rylee Sagester hit a deep three-pointer, and then on the defensive end, Williams poked the ball free and got an easy transition layup. The Raiders went into the locker room at halftime with a nine-point lead, led by Lauren Scott with nine points.
Detroit Mercy came out of the halftime break on fire, scoring 26 points in the third quarter to erase Wright State's lead and tie the game at 56 entering the fourth quarter.
Wright State took back control of the game in the fourth quarter, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and 12-of-13 from the free throw line to build up an 11-point advantage at the final whistle.
Jasmine Edwards led Detroit Mercy with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting and knocked down seven of her 11 free throw attempts. Nisea Burrell led the Titans with nine rebounds and two assists.
In the box score, Wright State trailed the Titans in rebounds (27-40) and second-chance points (4-12) but led in fast-break points (16-0) and bench points (23-21). The Raiders forced 21 Detroit Mercy turnovers thanks to 12 steals, highlighted by Williams' six.
