ATHENS, GA- The Wright State baseball team dropped its season opener to the Georgia Bulldogs 1-13 in seven innings Friday afternoon.
Wright State will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch for game one is slated for 1 p.m., and game two will follow 45 minutes after game one.
Georgia got on the board early with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first off the bat of Tre Phelps. Wright State would respond with a run of their own in the top of the third inning. The Raiders strung a pair of hits together and got a runner in scoring position. Cy Turner would put Wright State on the board as he came in to score on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs would pull away from the Raiders, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth and eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff single by Gus Gregory in the seventh, Georgia would sit down the next three Raiders to enact the 10-run rule.
On the mound for the Raiders, Cam Allen got the start but was pulled due to injury just a few batters into the game. Freshman Michael Zielinski followed Allen and pitched three scoreless frames for the Raiders in his collegiate debut, striking out four Bulldogs in the process. JJ Thompson, Matthew Johnson, and Caleb Ehling also made their season debuts out of the bullpen for the Raiders, with Johnson making his Wright State debut after transferring from Dayton in the offseason.
