ATHENS, GA- The Wright State baseball team got its first win of the season in a big way, taking down a power conference and ranked foe Georgia 6-3 Saturday night. Splitting the Saturday twin bill. The Bulldogs entered the weekend as the no. 6 national seed in the Baseball America poll and no. 15 in the D1Baseball poll.
Â
Wright State (1-2) will be back in action next weekend as they travel down to North Carolina to take on Charlotte February 20-22. The Raiders and 49ers will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday for the series finale. Friday and Sunday's games will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available for all three games.
Â
Warren Harzell got the start for the Raiders on the mound, going three-plus innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five, before turning the ball over to Chet Lax. The junior pitched a gem out of the bullpen, pitching four innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five Bulldogs. Michael Bilo came in and pitched a clean eighth inning, allowing no hits and striking out one. Malachi Paplanus came in and got the save in the ninth inning, allowing no hits and two walks.
Â
After three scoreless frames, the Raiders got on the board first in the series finale. In the top of the fourth inning, Cy Turner stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-run double up the right field line. After stealing third, a few pitches later, Turner would come in to score on a Zac Butler suicide squeeze bunt up the first base line, giving the Raiders a three-run advantage.
Â
Georgia would answer right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI single off the bat of Bryce Calloway.
Â
Wright State hung another crooked number on the scoreboard at the top of the fifth inning. After Hunter Warren served a single out to center field, Patrick Fultz hammered a double into right that set the Raiders up with two runners in scoring position. Moments later, Warren would come in to score on a Bulldog wild pitch. Two pitches later, JP Peltier got his pitch and did not miss it. The junior hammered a ball over the wall in right-center field to give the Raiders a 6-2 advantage.
Â
The Bulldogs cut into the Wright State lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh. Georgia would once again threaten in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and second and one out. Tre Phelps sent a towering shot out to left that was caught by Parker Falkenstein on the warning track. The Bulldog runner on second base tried to tag up to third base but was cut down by the Raiders' defense. Falkenstein fired the ball to Blomquist, who rifled it to Fultz at third, and he laid down the tag to secure the win for Wright State.
Â
Earlier on Saturday, Wright State dropped the first leg of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon, 0-9.
Â
Griffen Paige got the start for the Raiders in game one and pitched four solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out three Bulldogs. Wright State flashed the leather in with Falkenstein ranging into the gap in left-center, laying out to make the diving catch, robbing Georgia of extra bases in the third inning, and Blomquist ranged over to his right and made a diving catch in foul ground just one ining later.
Â
Wright State limited the damage early with Georgia scoring two runs in the second and one run in the fifth before the Bulldogs blew the game open with six run sixth inning.
