ROCHESTER, MI- The Wright State women's basketball team picked up a massive 62-44 win on the road at Oakland Saturday afternoon. The win marks the first time the Raiders have swept the Michigan road trip since the 2019-20 season and the first time under head coach Kari Hoffman.
Wright State (9-18, 5-11 HL) will return home on Wednesday, February 18th, to host Milwaukee for its annual Pink Game. Tip-off inside the Nutter Center is set for 7 p.m., and the first 500 fans will receive a pink Wright State t-shirt.
The win moves the Raiders into eighth place in the Horizon League standings with four games remaining in the regular season.
Breezie Williams finished with a game-high 24 points, shooting 77% from the floor (10-13) and 100% from behind the three-point line (4-4), while also leading the team with seven rebounds and tying for the team lead in assists with three. Saturday marks Williams' eighth 20-plus-point performance of the season and her third in her last four games. Claire Henson finished with 11 points to join Williams in double digits, her second consecutive game in double figures after turning in 18 Thursday night in Detroit.
Wright State got it done on the defensive end, holding Oakland to just 44 points, the lowest they have held any opponent this season. It is also the lowest Wright State has held any opponent to since holding Ohio Christian to 37 on November 17, 2022, and the lowest the Raiders have held a D1 opponent to since holding IU Indy (then IUPUI) to 41 points on March 9, 2021.
After each team hit its first field goal, the Golden Grizzlies led 3-2, but the Raiders would respond quickly with a 10-point run in the middle of the first quarter to take the lead and never look back.
After holding Oakland to eight points in the first quarter, the Raiders would hold them to nine in the second while scoring 15 points of their own to jump out to a 10-point lead at halftime.
Wright State would erupt for 24 points in the third quarter, including an 18-0 run to end the quarter. Williams took over in the quarter, scoring 13 points in the third and knocking down three three-pointers. Oakland would outscore the Raiders by four in the fourth, but it was too little too late, and Wright State would win dominantly.
Makenzie Luehring led Oakland with 14 points Saturday afternoon, joined in double digits by Filippa Goula with 13 points of her own.
In the box score, Wright State led Oakland in rebounds (43-39), points in the paint (24-18), second-chance points (7-3), and bench points (16-9). The two squads tied with six fast-break points each.
