CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Wright State baseball team dropped the series finale at Charlotte Sunday afternoon, 2-9.
Â
Wright State (1-5) will return home to Dayton for its home opener against Kent State on Wednesday, February 25. First pitch at Nischwitz Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
Â
Charlotte jumped out to an early lead thanks to back-to-back homers by Dawson Bryce and Cody Gunderson in the first, taking a 3-0 lead.
Â
After three shutout innings from Charlotte starter Wesley Jones, Hunter Warren would get the Raiders on the board with a solo shot in the top of the fourth. The homer is Warren's second of the season and second in as many days. The redshirt sophomore has already passed his home run total from a season ago, a campaign in which he played 61 games en route to Horizon League Freshman of the Year honors.
Â
Charlotte would break the game open with a crooked number in the bottom of the fifth inning. The 49ers would string together five hits and bring in four runs to extend their lead to 7-1. Charlotte would also add single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings to add some insurance runs.
Â
Wright State would get its second run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Andrew Duncan served an RBI double into right-center, scoring JP Peltier from second base.
Â
On the mounds for the Raiders, Freshman Cooper Gilkerson made his collegiate debut, pitching 1.1 innings of relief and striking out one Charlotte batter. Warren Harzell got the start on the mound for the Raiders, going four innings before turning the ball over to Chet Lax, Gilkerson, Keegan Holmstrom, and Abe Crall.
