KNOXVILLE, TN- The Wright State baseball team came up short of Tennessee Saturday afternoon in Rocky Top, falling 4-5.
Â
Wright State (4-8) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Tennessee for the series finale at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
Â
The Raiders got on the board in the top of the first for the second game in a row. Gus Gregory started the game out with a walk and advanced to third when Andrew Duncan served a double out to the gap in right-center. Gregory would come in to score on a Hunter Warren groundout, and Duncan would come in to score a couple of batters later when Braylen Blomquist reached on a fielder's choice.
Â
Tennessee would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when Reese Champman sent a solo shot over the wall in right field. Chapman would give the Volunteers the lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Henry Ford would give Tennessee a pivotal run of insurance with a solo shot in the top of the bottom of the fifth.
Â
The Raiders would get two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Tennessee deficit back to one run. Warren would come in to score on a Patrick Fultz RBI groundout, and Cy Turner would drive in a run of his own, sending an RBI single out to right field. But the Tennessee bullpen would hang three straight zeros to clinch the series victory.
Â
Griffen Paige got the start for the Raiders and pitched the first four innings before turning the ball over to the Wright State bullpen. The bullpen delivered four shutout innings to keep the Raiders in striking distance. Cooper Gilkerson was the first man out of the bullpen, pitching two shutout innings before turning the ball over to JJ Thompson, who pitched 1.2 innings before giving the ball to Cooper Ashby, who got the only batter he faced on one pitch.
