KNOXVILLE, TN- The Wright State baseball team shutout No. 19 Tennessee 6-0 on Sunday afternoon to pick up a big win in the finale of the three-game set in Knoxville. It is the second ranked win for the Raiders this season after taking down No. 6 Georgia opening weekend.
Â
Wright State (5-8) will take a short trip over to Indiana on Tuesday, March 20, for a midweek matchup with the Hoosiers. First pitch in Bloomington is slated for 5 p.m.
Â
The Raiders got a quality start on the mound from junior Chet Lax in his home state Sunday afternoon. The Hendersonville, TN native twirled seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits while striking out four Volunteers. Lax commanded the strike zone, throwing 63 strikes on 84 pitches and allowing no walks on the afternoon. The left-hander picked up the win, moving him to 4-0 on the season
Â
Tennessee threatened to strike first in the bottom of the third inning. With a runner on second base, Henry Ford delivered with a single out to left field. The Tennessee base runner would round third but was cut down at home when JP Peltier fired the ball home to Zac Butler, who laid the tag down to end the third inning.
Â
After five scoreless frames, the Raiders would strike first with three runs in the top of the sixth. Peltier would get the party started with a two-run double up the left field line. Cy Turner would drive in Peltier a few batters later with a double of his own.
Â
Peltier would add a run of insurance in the top of the eighth with a solo shot over the wall in left. The home run is Peltier's third of the season. Butler would give the Raiders even more insurance in the top of the ninth with a two-run shot out to left, his first homer of the season.
Â
After his seven shutout frames, Lax would turn the ball over to Malachi Paplanus for the final two innings. The sophomore shut down Tennessee, allowing just one hit while striking out two Volunteers.
