Box Score
Down as much as 10 in the second half and five with 4:35 remaining, the Wright State men's basketball team rallied down the stretch and, behind two DaShaun Wood foul shots with 14.1 seconds remaining, pulled out a 50-49 win over the Detroit Titans Saturday afternoon in the home and Horizon League opener for the Raiders.
A Wood layup with 7:15 to play in the first half gave WSU a 22-18 advantage, but that turned out to be the final points of the period for the Raiders as the Titans scored the last five points, including a Muhammad Abdur-Rahim three, to take a 23-22 lead at the break.
Reinaldo Smith hit a three at the 15:28 mark to break the Raider scoring drought and cut the deficit to 30-27, but Detroit followed with seven straight points, five by Jon Goode, to go up 37-27 with 12:47 remaining.
Wright State chipped away from there, though, and finally went in front 48-47 as Vaughn Duggins connected on a three from the left elbow with 52 seconds left.
Chris Hayes again gave Detroit the lead with two foul shots at the 26.1-second mark, but Wood was fouled as he drove along the right side of the lane and made both free throws with 14.1 seconds remaining.
Detroit had one last chance, but Brandon Cotton's jumper from the right baseline went off the rim and, after a scramble for the ball, Detroit maintained possession, but with just two-tenths of a second to play, making it impossible for the Titans to get a second shot off in time.
The Titans outshot the Raiders 44-32 percent, held a 35-27 rebounding advantage and led 20-12 in points in the paint. Wright State, however, countered by forcing 18 turnovers while committing just eight, resulting in a 20-5 edge in points off of turnovers, and hit all 10 of its free throw attempts while Detroit was eight of 11.
Wood led all scorers with 19 for the Raiders, 14 of those coming in the first half, while Duggins added nine off the bench.
Ryvon Covile posted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds for Detroit (2-5, 0-1 Horizon) while Cotton had nine, Hayes eight and Goode eight off the bench.
Wright State, now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Horizon League, now hits the road for three straight, starting on Tuesday, December 5, at Bradley. Game time is 8:00 Eastern.
