Men Pull Out 63-62 Win Over Chicago State

Box Score

Two DaShaun Wood foul shots with 5.4 seconds remaining gave the Wright State men's basketball team a thrilling 63-62 victory over the Chicago State Cougars Thursday night at the Nutter Center.

Chicago State led 19-13 after a John Cantrell dunk with 9:16 left in the first half, but the Raiders followed with a 10-2 run over the next 2:33, half of those coming from Wood, to go in front 23-21.

A three-point play by Cantrell gave the Cougars the lead again, but Wood added four more to put WSU back ahead and a layup from the senior guard, along with a Jordan Pleiman jumper, helped Wright State take a 36-31 advantage at the half.

The Raiders led throughout the second half, but the margin was never greater than nine or as small as three until a triple from the top of the key by Aaron Williams drew Chicago State to within two at 61-59 with 42 seconds remaining. After a Wright State turnover, a fast-break three from David Holston along the left side at the 14.1-second mark gave the Cougars a 62-61 lead.

That set the stage for Wood as, in an attempt to set up the final shot, he drove along the right side of the lane and was fouled with 5.4 seconds left. After Wood sank both free throws, Chicago State still had one last chance, but a three attempt by Royce Parran went off the backboard and rim as time expired.

The Cougars led in rebounds (36-35), points off of turnovers (19-15), second-chance points (13-4) and fast-break points (7-2), but the Raiders outshot Chicago State 43-38 percent and went 14 of 17 from the foul line compared to 10 of 12 for CSU.

Wood led all scorers with 25 for Wright State along with six rebounds and four assists while Vaughn Duggins added 15 points, six boards and four assists and Pleiman 11 points and seven rebounds.

Williams paced Chicago State (5-10) with a near double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds while Kourtney Calvin had 12 points, Parran 11 points and five assists and Cantrell 11 points.

Wright State, now 5-5 on the season, heads to Baton Rouge next week for the Hispanic Fund Classic. The Raiders will play three different teams in three days, starting with the host and nationally-ranked LSU Tigers on Wednesday, December 27. Tip-off is at 8:30 Eastern time.
