Volleyball Sweeps Ball State

The Wright State volleyball team has now won five of its last six matches after sweeping the Ball State Cardinals Tuesday night in nonleague action at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 30-24, 30-28, 30-22.

WSU trailed 18-16 in game one before tying the game on kills by Lindsey Frank and Samantha Connor. Ball State's Brittany May temporary stopped the momentum with a kill, but the Raiders followed by scoring the next five points in succession, including back-to-back service aces from Alisha Kimbro and kills by Jenny Schultz and Connor, to go for good at 23-19.

Game two was tied at 22 until Wright State went ahead on a service error and a Schultz kill. The Cardinals trailed by one on four different occeasions after that, but WSU held on for the win thanks to three Kimbro kills and one from Schultz on game point.

The Raiders never trailed in game three, but didn't pull away until the end as Tara Geegan and Kimbro each had two kills as part of Wright State's final five points.

Wright State outhit Ball State .283-.189, including a .312 percentage in the first game and .378 in the third, and had a 55-41 edge in kills.

For the third time in the last four matches, Geegan hit over .400 as she finished at .462 with a team-leading 14 kills. Kimbro added 12 kills, Schultz nine along with nine digs, and Becca Awaa chipped in seven kills in hitting .583. Frank had seven kills and a .375 hitting percentage along with 43 assists and six digs.

Kelly Cochran paced Ball State (2-9) with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs.

The victory was Wright State's first over Ball State since winning a four-game decision on September 13, 1983, ending a three-match losing streak to the Cardinals.

The Raiders (6-8), now turn their attentions to the Horizon League schedule, which begins on Friday, September 22, at 8:00 Eastern as WSU visits Loyola in a rematch of last season's League championship match. The next home match is on Friday, September 29, against Butler starting at 7:00.
