The Wright State men's basketball team bounced back in a big way from Saturday's setback at #12 Butler as, behind a huge night from DaShaun Wood and 56 percent shooting from the field, the Raiders pulled away in the second half for an 81-55 win over the Loyola Ramblers in Horizon League action at the Nutter Center Wednesday night.
WSU led just 10-8 until scoring eight of the next nine points, five of those coming from Scottie Wilson. Loyola closed the margin to 24-20 on two Leon Young foul shots with 6:28 to go in the half, but Vaughn Duggins answered with a three-point play and the Raiders held a 37-30 advantage at the break following a Wilson tip-in in the final minute.
A 13-0 run over a four-minute span, nine by Wood, extended the Wright State lead to 54-32 at the 14:04 mark of the second half and the Raiders lead was never smaller than 19 the rest of the way with the largest advantage being the final score.
Wright State was consistent throughout as the Raiders shot 58 percent in the first half and 55 percent the final 20 minutes to finish the night at 56 percent overall compared to 35 percent for the Ramblers.
Loyola held a slight edge on the boards 32-28, but WSU dominated in points in the paint (38-26) and points off of turnovers (28-17) as the Raiders forced 19 turnovers while committing just 13.
Wood finished with a season-high 32 points, 19 coming in the second half, while Drew Burleson added 11 to become the 26th Raider to reach the 1000 point plateau for a career (1,002). Todd Brown also had 11 while Duggins chipped in 10, Wilson nine and Jordan Pleiman eight.
Majak Kou paced Loyola (11-6, 3-2 Horizon) with 15 points while Young had 12, J.R. Blount 10 and Blake Schilb eight along with six assists.
Wright State, now 10-7 overall and 3-1 in the Horizon League, wraps up the brief two-game homestand Saturday at 7:00 against Green Bay.
